Avon Romance wants to hear from you!

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Avon Books has created a quick, 10-minute survey asking readers their reading habits—how they find and buy their books, how they engage with authors, publishers, and other readers online, what they like about romance novels specifically, at what price point they will buy who and what etc. Please take a little time out of your day (or weekend) and offer your valuable input.   Here’s the link to the survey, which can be found on Avon’s  Facebook page.

New: Top 20 Lists

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

Just a quick note to bring my brand new Top 20 Lists to your attention.  The Season now features:

Top 20:

Bestselling Books – These are books that are featured on The Season site. Their rankings are determined by using a weighted average of Amazon (70%)  and B&N (30%) bestselling lists. The book will generally appear on both lists. The book will not appear on the list if it only appears on the B&N list but the reverse can be true.

Most Viewed – These are the books that have the most page views by visitors to the site.

Best Reviewed – These are the books that have the best reviewed books by The Season reviewers in the order of most page views.  So the longer a book with a good rating stays on the Most Viewed list, the longer it will remain on this list.

You can Retweet and also share these pages lists on Facebook.  :)

What’s missing out there?

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

This going to a very short post. I have a sick child at home with me today. But this is a question I’ve been wanting to ask for a bit now and it’s directed at readers–I don’t care if you’re a published author, an aspiring author because we all do read. What kind of books are you missing? When you browse the book store shelves be it real or virtual, what do you wish you could find there that you just cannot? I’m really interested the answers.

Comment and win Wynonna Judd’s RESTLESS HEART.

The .99 Book

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Ninety-nine cent full-length book. eBook readers, have you come across one of these before? Have you bought one? Have you read one?

The price of these books is the root of many conversations on self-published forums. Should they? Shouldn’t they? Will it help to increase sales? And if it does, will the sizable drop in revenue make it worth lowering the price of the book to .99.

So those are the thoughts of authors attempting to get your attention by making their book attractive enough for you to try. But as a reader, can you be lured into buying an ebook at this price point? Would you buy a book by an unknown author–unpublished on the most part–for the price of .99? Or are you one of those readers who would give that book a gimlet eye in the belief that anything selling that cheap can’t possibly be good?  What would move you to purchase a .99 book?

**You may select up to 2 answers

Would you buy a .99 book from an unknown author?

Review:I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti

Author: Giulia Melucci
Publisher: Grand Central
Pub. Date: May 5, 2010
ISBN-13: 978-0446534413
Retail: $13.99
304 pages

From failure to fusilli, this deliciously hilarious read tells the story of Giulia Melucci’s fizzled romances and the mouth-watering recipes she used to seduce her men, smooth over the lumps, and console herself when the relationships flamed out.

From an affectionate alcoholic, to the classic New York City commitment-phobe, to a hipster aged past his sell date, and not one, but two novelists with Peter Pan complexes, Giulia has cooked for them all. She suffers each disappointment with resolute cheer (after a few tears) and a bowl of pastina (recipe included) and has lived to tell the tale so that other women may go out, hopefully with greater success, and if that’s not possible, at least have something good to eat.

Peppered throughout Giulia’s delightful and often poignant remembrances are fond recollections of her mother’s cooking, the recipes she learned from her, and many she invented on her own inspired by the men in her life. Readers will howl at Giulia’s boyfriend-littered past and swoon over her irresistible culinary creations.

~*~*~

I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti is a roller-coaster ride through Giulia Melucci’s love life, mental gymnastics and kitchen cupboard. With each culinary creation as inspired by its romantic escapade, Melucci passionately energizes her relationship status while ‘dishing’ out the details.

The thread of leaping from one relationship to another has resulted in a book that is as much an interesting gastronomic journey as it is a trip through the world of dating in the big city.

I am often amazed and pleased when reading a memoir, how honest and forthright an author is to opening up and sharing the varying emotional chapters of their life through a book filled with intimate details and insights. Authentic and organic come to mind when we peer into the world of another and then like a car crash, see something we know we shouldn’t, but are compelled to keep looking.

Giulia Melucci’s whirlwind, if frantic trip through the romantic world is one such memoir. From the brief sketches of her tony publicity world to the slog of dating, she tries obsessively to fit square pegs into round holes even as glaring red flags go up for the readers (the beauty of being the outsider looking in). The passage of one relationship to another is offset by the comfort food she provides.

An unabashed Italian with a flair for the dramatic and spices, Melucci serves up raw information with biting, sarcastic wit aimed more at her string of broken relationships than herself and her choice to pursue them. However, a maturity sets in toward the end of this debut novel as the author recognizes and finally voices, “While I’ve struggled with relationships, cooking has been a fairly consistent source of satisfaction.”

The reader goes along with Melucci for a variety of dates, one-night stands and relationships from long-term Ethan, who seemed as good a fit as much for his love of the kitchen as his good-nature, to accomplished novelist Mitch and the much-older, tortured Marcus. In fact, Marcus has the reader scratching their head asking, “What was she thinking?” Yes, she does too, and that’s where the ‘here it is and I know it, but I’m going to share it anyway’ attitude gives the reader an appreciation for what she goes through. It also provides some familiarity for anyone who has embarked on a search for a meaningful partnership only to enter into an inappropriate one despite the Red Threat Level warning.

Good sport, and friend Ginia, dispenses advice, emergency dating diagnoses and a shoulder to cry on as Melucci steers through her dating scene. Humorous anecdotes are peppered throughout this book while tales of family life also feel the sting of Melucci’s assessments. Through it all, you connect with a vague acquaintance of her wistful search and struggle continuing to cheer her on. Not surprisingly, her dishes vary in complexity reflecting the status of her state-of-mind as much as her current or lack-thereof, boyfriend.

From Ethan who inspired ‘Risotto with Intricately Layered Hearts’ to the obvious ‘F@#k You Cupcakes’ for Marcus, a bevy of tempting recipes almost make the reader look forward to Melucci’s next experience.

Her culinary conquests appear as unscathed as her relationships are doomed. I tried the ‘First Date Butterflies’ dish (created for Mitch) with tuna and farfalle and never knew a simple can of tuna could be transformed into such a tasty treat!

As a side note, some of the details both about family, boyfriends and dips into drugs are sharp and not for the faint hearted. But I have come to value this honesty in a memoir as what keeps the book real, relatable and readers turning the pages.

Still, this is a poignant, hip memoir that can be appreciated for its wit, self-deprecating manner and recipes as much as its honesty and details, Melucci provides an authentic voice to her sometimes questionable romantic liaisons, decisions and attempt to find Mr. Right while pouring her energy into dishes that will satisfy where her relationships do not.

Help Wanted: Reviewers — & Other News

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

So many books, so little time…or too few reviewers. The Season is looking for book lovers, romance readers who can write a good review. The genres I’m more keen to cover are: Erotic Romance, Paranormal, Inspirational and–yes this is new–Mystery. I know I love a good Mystery–I bow to the Mystery goddess that is Agatha Christie.

Have no fear, historical romances are still the main focus of this site but I find as my tastes branch out, so does The Season site. And in saying that, look out for an expanded Contemporary Romance section. I couldn’t believe that when working on the July issue (which will be online June 20th) that there are NOT a lot of single title contemporary romances coming out every month. I know, for myself, I’d like to see lots more of them.

If you’re interested in reviewing for The Season, please contact me at theseason at historicalromancereleases dot com. Please include a sample of a review you’ve written or of your writing.

Coming this week:

Monday: POV–his or hers, which do you prefer?

Throughout the week: Reviews & Features: Books that will be given away in The Season’s Red, White and Blue Fireworks Giveaway on July 4th!

Publishing at its best

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

This YouTube video first came to my attention via literary agent, Kristin Nelson’s Blog. I’ve watched this too many times to count over the year or so. The last time I looked for it, it was gone. Well, it’s back! Once again, Kristin has posted it, and now that I have a blog, I want to–need to–share it with you. And for those of us who grew up on British comedy (as I did) and/or know anything about publishing, the hilarity of this segment from Mitchell & Web feels like a homecoming present. Enjoy!

Odds and Ends News

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I intended today as an Hook Me: Excerpt Thursday day, but alas it is not. So I’m just going to do some odds and ends news.

First, I put up a new page on The Season website titled Marketplace. After receiving a request to include an additional bookseller link to purchase books (currently I have direct buy links for all the books on the site to Barnes & Noble, Borders, Amazon, Indie Bound, Powell’s and Books-a-Million) I decided to do one better and give online booksellers their own page.

Now, if you’re like me and buy lots of books, this is the perfect reference page for you as I’ve included a small note to let you know what the savings are for each bookseller. And again, if you’re like me and also buy ebooks, I have a slew of places where you can purchase your favourite authors in the various electronic format. I used to buy my ebooks in the digital .pdf format but after hearing that the iPad would be using the ePub format, I switched to that format as I have every intention of getting an iPad once the kinks from the initial version are worked out. If after checking out the page, you can think of another online bookseller that should be there, please contact me and let me know.

Time is winding down to enter to win a $25 Amazon Gift Certificate simply by answering a question about my debut, SINFUL SURRENDER. If you have the book, just flip to page 304, the answer is there. It’s that easy. Click here for entry details. March 5th is entry deadline.

Oh and good news on this front. SINFUL SURRENDER was voted Borders Book Club selection in Rockford, IL for the month of March. I was ecstatic when I heard. Thank you, ladies. I’m completely flattered and so happy you enjoyed the book. :D

~*~*~

Have you voted for the February Top Pick? March 6th is the last day to cast your vote. As it stands, the top three ranked are:

Bound By Temptation ~ Lavinia Kent
A Midwife Crisis ~ Lisa Cooke
Secrets of Sin ~ Chloe Harris

~*~*~

Good news. I’ve found another person to review books for the blog. YAY! Her name is Sherry M and she loves historical and contemporary romance. She’s been an avid reader for the past fifteen years and the best news is she lives down the street from me. I can literally walk the books over to her to review. How sweet is that? This will be her first crack at actually writing reviews but she has good and strong opinions. I’m hoping I can have a review from her next week. Welcome Sherry! (Now she has to start following my blog. LOL)

Did you know that on The Season website, if you click THE SEASON on the top of any page, it will take you to the front page.
