Giveaway: Maggie Robinson pens an Improper Gentleman

Looks and Lucy Are Deceiving

Hi, Seasoned Readers! I’m here today to talk about my contribution to the Brava anthology Improper Gentlemen, “To Match a Thief,” which debuts tomorrow. I wanted the novella to be loosely connected to my Courtesan Court series, which takes place on fictional Jane Street, home to the most exclusive mistresses in London. An unseen ‘accidental’ character from the previous books conveniently popped up—Lucy Dellamar, who was gossiped about for her light fingers. All the courtesans on the street suspected her of theft, and the heroines of Mistress by Mistake and Mistress by Midnight had been warned about her. I got to thinking, who is Lucy and why is she stealing? The rest is history and “To Match a Thief.”

Lucy is not quite a courtesan, to steal the title from my other novella in last year’s Lords of Passion. Her protector Lord Percy Ferguson has a very private life, and the hero, Sir Simon Keith, is definitely not a gentleman. In fact, he’s most improper. ;) Not one of them is what they appear to be, and I had such fun revealing their secrets.

And the best part? At a third of the length of a novel, I was able tell their tale in a relatively short space of writing time. Don’t worry, I didn’t skimp. Publishers Weekly says: “Robinson’s witty multidimensional characters are vividly entertaining in “To Match a Thief.”

Do you read anthologies or hold out for a full-length book? Have you discovered new writers by reading a story in an anthology? I’ve got a signed copy of Improper Gentlemen for one commenter, and I’ll be back next month (thanks Bev!) to give away a copy of Mistress by Marriage!

Amazon has made it easy to Gift their eBooks

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Yes, I may occasionally grumble about Amazon’s digital dominance, but I have to hand it to them, they are terribly innovative. Yesterday, I practically stumbled over the fact that you can now gift a digital book. This I think is AWESOME! So today, I’m going to gift some Amazon ebooks to my lovely visitors who have some device that they can read Kindle books. Which books you ask? Well, as I am a total–well kind of–bargain hunter, I’ve selected some of the eSteal books, that way I can give away 3 digital copies of each. Here’s the selection…

When A Character Won’t Let Go

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

By Vanessa Kelly

Have you ever read a book that featured a character that grabbed you by the throat and wouldn’t let go?  One so compelling that every time you had to put the book down you couldn’t wait to get back to it.  I can name several characters like that, spanning genres.  In romance, one that springs immediately to mind is Dain, the tortured hero of Loretta Chase’s amazing book, Lord of Scoundrels.  I was totally fascinated by Dain’s story and captivated by the way such a seemingly hard-hearted rake could be so empathetic and engaging.  Chase’s masterful portrayal of Dain practically leaps off the page, rightly earning the book a place on many keeper shelves and “best” lists throughout romancelandia.

An author can also have this type of experience with one of her own creations.  Every once in a while—if she’s lucky—her muse stumbles upon a character who grabs her by the collar, shakes her around, and won’t let go until he or she is fully realized on the pages of the author’s next manuscript.  It’s an awesome experience and it’s one that writers pray to have with every book.

I was lucky enough to have this experience with the heroine of my latest Regency-set historical romance, My Favorite Countess.  Bathsheba, Lady Randolph, was a tough nut to crack.  She kept me awake at nights and had me cursing on more than one occasion—when she wasn’t making me laugh, that is, which happened quite a lot.  But the interesting thing about Bathsheba is that I never in a million years envisioned her as a heroine.  Ever!

Bathsheba started out as a throwaway line in my first book, Mastering The Marquess.  She was the reputed mistress of Lord Trask, best friend to Lord Silverton, the hero of MTM.  Bathsheba never even appeared on stage in that book, but already people were gossiping about her.  I didn’t think too much about it but I filed her away in the back of my head, just in case I needed a sophisticated society widow for a later book.

Well, I didn’t have to wait too long for Bathsheba to pop up again.  Simon, Lord Trask, was the hero of my next book, Sex And The Single Earl.  Much to my surprise, that book started with Simon breaking off his relationship with Bathsheba because he had decided to court Sophie Stanton, the heroine of the book.  Bathsheba was seriously annoyed about that, and she spent the rest of the book causing as much trouble for Sophie and Simon as she could.  In fact, she was downright nasty, and I could hardly imagine how anyone could be so mean to poor Sophie.

But even as I was concocting all kinds of devious scenarios for Bathsheba to cause havoc in other characters’ lives, I couldn’t help thinking about her.  Why was she so nasty to Sophie?  Why was she so determined to have Simon when she didn’t even love him?  Why, in fact, was she so darned desperate when she was a rich countess and one of the acknowledged leaders of the ton?  Those questions just wouldn’t leave me alone.

I wrote My Favorite Countess in order to answer those vexing questions.  And you know what?  I had a great time doing it.  By the time I started writing the book, Bathsheba was so alive in my head that she always took me exactly where I needed to go.  Not that it was always easy.  After all, she was the villainess of the previous book.  I not only had to justify Bathsheba’s past behaviour by creating a compelling backstory for her, I had to make her face some difficult challenges so she could grow beyond her limitations and truly become the heroine I thought she deserved to be.

Fortunately, she didn’t have to do it alone.  I gave her a wonderful hero in the character of John Blackmore, a handsome, crusading slum doctor and a pillar of strength who assisted Bathsheba through her trials and tribulations.

As I said, it wasn’t always easy dealing with Bathsheba, but I’m so glad I listened to her and gave the lady her own book.

What characters in romance have grabbed you by the throat?  Was it a plucky heroine, a hardened rake, an evil but redeemable villain, or a vampire on the run from the sun?  Tell me who that character is for a chance to win a copy of My Favorite Countess.

The Book for the Good Cause

A Book with a Cause by Lori Brighton

When I was asked to join a group of self-published authors writing an anthology, I jumped at the chance. Not only would I be writing a short story that would be featured with some well-respected self-published authors, but the money would also be going to charity!

Kiss Me, Kill Me is an Ebook anthology of novellas, all paranormal romance, all by self-published authors and all proceeds go to the GreaterGood.Org, a charity that “funds leading nonprofit organizations around the world in order to alleviate poverty and hunger, promote peace, address cancer and other widespread health problems, foster literacy and provide education, preserve vital habitats in peril, and provide protection and care to vulnerable animals.”

Each story in the anthology is 5,000 to 20,000 words. Not only is the anthology only 99 cents, but it’s a great way to try out a new author. Interested? Read the blurbs below!

A Ghoulish Valentine by H.P. Mallory:
Dulcie O’Neil can’t help her attraction to Knight Vander, much though she tries to fight her feelings. When she begrudgingly accepts his invitation to dinner and a movie, she can’t imagine her evening will be derailed by a cemetery full of hungry ghouls and one incredibly sexy man.

Cat Fight by Zoe Winters:
Cat Fight takes place in Zoe Winters’ “PretVerse”. Greta is a cat therian (shifter). She’s been involved with Dayne, a local sorcerer since she sought his protection from her murderous tribe. After a fight, Greta shifts into cat form and refuses to come back out.

Impulse Control by Susan Bischoff:
In the world of the Talent Chronicles, kids born with supernatural powers are taken from their families and forced into government research facilities called State Schools. At one such school, a group of Talents must work together to stop a dangerous experiment that’s already killed two of their peers and threatens others. If they’re caught they face Detention, and Detention at a State School has a whole different meaning.

Wild Passion by Lori Brighton:
James is a treasure hunter intent on collecting a deadly, priceless statue. Then he meets Adelaide, a stubbornly beautiful and mysterious woman who knows more about the statue than she admits. Suddenly, James is tempted to give up everything for the one treasure he can’t seem to own … Adelaide.

A Fairytale Ending by M.T. Murphy:
An unlucky actress discovers that there is no good and bad when it comes to vampires and werewolves, only bad and worse.

Blind Sight by Kait Nolan:
Isla’s ability as a Seer has made her a life-long captive of a paranormal crime lord. Fae assassin, Ransom, offers her a chance at escape, but when she touches his hand she sees only blood, horror, apocalypse. What reason can Ransom have for wanting to rescue her, and can she possibly trust a man who deals in death?

The Sacrifice by Toni LoTempio:
After a chance meeting with the mysterious Alfred Barstow, Jennifer is swept off her feet by his whirlwind courtship of her, so much so that she accepts his proposal of marriage. Leaving her boyfriend Peter behind, she heads off to start a new life in California, unaware there’s more to Alfred than meets the eye – and a sinister plot behind his proposal. The Sacrifice is a story about what happens when the man of your dreams turns out to be your worst nightmare…and then some!

Until the Breaking of the Day by Daniel Arenson:
The Underground. A realm of flame, blood, and knives in the dark. When its prince returns from exile, a young demon girl will learn his secrets.

If You Leave by Stacey Wallace Benefiel:
Despite their devotion to one another, Gabrielle and Jorge have been living separate lives. That is, until Gabrielle’s life ends. Reunited and it feels so…complicated?

So, to celebrate, we’re giving away 2 Ecopies of Kiss Me, Kill Me.

My short story in the anthology, Wild Passion, is actually the third and final story in my Wild Series. And so to celebrate the release of Wild Desire, my second book in the Wild Series, I’m also giving the winners a signed, printed copy of Wild Desire. Just leave a comment to win an Ecopy of Kiss Me, Kill Me and a printed copy of Wild Desire!

WILD DESIRE by Lori Brighton
Available March 1, 2010 from Kensington Publishing

Did he really like her? Or was she just another woman to him? Did he remember the way he touched her? The way she moaned his name? Heat flushed her cheeks. Slowly, she glanced back, her chin to her shoulder as she peeked at him. His face was turned away from her. There, seated against the sandstone wall with his shirt hanging open, the man looked like a statue come to life.

As if pulled by some unknown force, Bea started forward on her hands and knees. Her gaze pinned to him, she suddenly felt like a hunter and he her prey. She had no idea what she planned to do when she reached his side. Shove him backward, press her mouth to his, tear off his clothes. How shocked he’d be. The thought almost made her giggle. Only a few feet from him, she paused in indecision.

“What do you want, Bea?” he asked, his gaze still focused on the far wall.

What did she want? You. You to touch me. To make me moan your name.

“How did you see me approach?” she asked, more to fill the silence than to satisfy any curiosity.

He turned his head, looking directly at her. “I could smell you.”

That gave her pause. She wasn’t quite sure if she should be embarrassed or not. “Do I smell that horrible?”

She thought the corner of his mouth lifted, but with the lack of light, she wasn’t quite sure. “No. Quite the opposite. Your scent is…refreshing, clean, unique. Sometimes I think I could pick up your scent from a million others.”

Her heart hammered in her chest, his words taunting her already flared desire. She crawled closer to him, her hands on the cool, stone floor. “Do you know what you smell like?”

He laughed, lowering his thick lashes as he looked at the ground. “I can imagine.”

She didn’t pause until her face was only a breath from his. “Sunlight. Warmth.”

His jaw clenched, his throat working as he swallowed. She didn’t wait for him to kiss her, but leaned forward and pressed her lips to his. Mad. She was completely and utterly mad. She didn’t know how she’d become so bold. Perhaps it was the statues. Perhaps the fact that she was experienced now. Or perhaps because she ached fiercely and knew only Colin could ease that pain.

Bea wrapped her arms around his neck as his fingers slid into her hair.

“Colin,” she whispered against his mouth. “How terribly I’ve wanted to kiss you.”

He growled low in his throat. They both came up on their knees, desperate to touch body to body. Colin tugged on her hair, tilting her head back. “Do you realize what words like that can do to a man?”

He pressed his lips to her neck. Shivers raced over her skin, heated tremors that shook in her core.

“Such words can drive a man insane, Bea.”

But she wanted him mad, mad with desire. Mad with wanting her.

Colin stood, lifting Bea with him. She wrapped her legs around his waist as he pressed her back against the cold sandstone. Trapped between the wall and the hard man holding her, a thrill coursed through her body. This is what she’d wanted, what she’d dreamt about.

~*~*~

Angela Johnson has another gem on her hands with Vow of Deception. Dramatic, passionate and endearing, this novel is a great read!

Sir Rand Montague is an honorable knight always seeking to serve King and country, even if he may not agree with the request. When he is ordered to escort Rosalyn Harcourt back to court so the King may arrange her next marriage, Rand must obey even if he knows marriage is the last thing Rosalyn desires. Rosalyn’s late husband was very cruel to her and she wants nothing more than to spend the rest of her days taking care of her lands and her son, but she must obey the King’s orders and return with Rand.

When they arrive at court, Rosalyn discovers she is to marry Sir Golan in two days. When Golan attacks Rosalyn before their wedding, Rand steps in determined to protect Rosalyn and marry her instead. Marriage will not solve all of their problems, though. Both Rosalyn and Rand have insecurities they refuse to share with one another and both have enemies that refuse to leave them alone. Secrets and suspicions are weighing heavily on both, not to mention the passion they never expected to feel for one another.

Vow of Deception has edge of your seat drama that made the book irresistible. The plot is complex and intriguing, yet fascinating and romantic. Very early on, you become so hooked, you can’t stop reading  until you finish it. Throughout the book, the pace moves quickly and has an emotionally intense ending. It is a story that lures you in, gives you everything and once it ends, you can’t ask for more.

The main characters in this romance are enthralling. Both the hero and heroine are complex and damaged by events in their past. I found myself sympathizing and relating to their struggles because Johnson outlines it all perfectly. It certainly isn’t a simple relationship to move through so be prepared for the intense journey of discovery as both characters fight their way through their insecurities. Rand and Rosalyn have a relationship that is developed with great care and gentility any romance fan would adore. You also have villains who are dangerous and despicable but increase the overall appeal of the drama within the story. Overall, the novel has an amazing cast of characters with great chemistry and perfect dialogue.

You will certainly be able to enjoy Vow of Deception without reading Johnson’s debut novel Vow of Seduction. The characters from the previous novel make an appearance in this story, but it isn’t so complex that the reader would be lost starting with the second novel. Yet the richness of the relationships between all the characters, and their past, would be strengthened by having read the first novel.

This certainly isn’t a lush fairytale story, but a more realistic tale for this time period and setting. It deals with vengeful enemies, power struggles, arranged marriages, unexpected romance and treachery. The ending justifies the emotional journey and makes it a worthwhile and wonderful read. Vow of Deception has fantastic characters, thrilling drama, vivid descriptions and a romance worth dying for. This novel is an absolutely delightful read, one that you should not pass up.
