Wanted: a heroine who’s just like me

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

by Kat Latham

Having moved to a new country just a couple of months ago, one of the biggest things I miss about my life in London is my friends. I miss talking about men and relationships with them. I miss venting about life’s challenges. I miss confessing all the ways I think I’m a bit messed up and discovering to my relief that they feel the same about themselves.

Missing my friends has made me all the more eager to seek out contemporary romance novels where the heroine seems like a woman I’d happily share a jug of sangria with. I love a heroine with a quirky voice, a funny outlook on life, and quite a few flaws.

This weekend I “met” one of those heroines. Her name is Jazz Shepherd, and she’s in author Amie Denman’s upcoming novel Her Lucky Catch.

Jazz is funny, uncoordinated and can laugh at herself. She’s not above gossiping about her romantic rival, and she stabbed her ex-husband in the butt with safety scissors when she caught him cheating.

Jazz is my kinda gal. She tells her story in first person, so as I was reading I felt more like I was sitting at a café (okay, maybe a cocktail bar) next to the marina where she works, listening as she told me all about her love life. Reading Her Lucky Catch is like getting tipsy with a woman who’s a lot like me.

But with a slight inclination toward violence.

This weekend I also read a novel where the heroine was perfect. It was a military romantic suspense, and the heroine was the best at everything she tried—the best helicopter pilot, a gourmet cook, and so incredibly skilled at self-defense that she wiped out a group of hulking secret servicemen at a gym.

This woman is nothing like me. She had not a single flaw, and I began resenting the time I had to spend with her. I couldn’t connect, couldn’t relate.

There are plenty of incredible romance heroines who are talented in ways I’ll never achieve, but I need to feel they’re similar to me in at least one way—even if it’s that we’re both imperfect.

The delightfully imperfect Jazz Shepherd made my weekend. I only wish I could buy her a drink.

Although Her Lucky Catch isn’t out until the end of February (mark your calendars), I’m shouting about it now because it’s one my picks for February’s contemporaries to covet. Stop by my blog this week and tell me what contemporary romance novel you’re coveting this month and you could win a gift certificate for yourself AND for the author you mention.

Do you like heroines to be people you can relate to? Or do you prefer them to be someone you wish you could be?

Weekly Update

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

I’m getting closer and closer to that 250,000 download goal  for ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE & SEDUCTION. As of this morning, free downloads between iBookstore and Amazon are 98,029, which means there are 151,971 more downloads to go before I raffle off the Kindle Fire. I’m hoping I can accomplish that goal in the first quarter of next year. Time will tell…

Final Day – To another great year!

Friday, August 26th, 2011

The party may be winding down, but it’s just the beginning of another year of books, giveaways and fun.

So what do I have cooked up for today? Firstly, today there will be 6 winners instead of 5 and they will each receive 6 books instead of 5 because in addition to 5 print books, they will also receive a digital book.

Second, Friday’s questions are going to put you to work. I have a couple of fast balls in store for you. And since I’m already late, let’s get moving.

Day Three – A ton a books

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

I don’t think I’ve ever appreciated or chortled over a word the way I do ton. No not in you weigh a ton but the London ton.

When my novella, All’s Fair in Love & Seduction came out, I called my older brother to let him know.  Excited for me, he immediately went to Amazon to check it out. Literally, a minute after we hung up, I got a rather concerned call from him. He wanted me to know that there was a spelling error in my blurb. I was naturally alarmed. Good Lord, how could I have misspelled something in something that short and something that had been gone over many times by myself as well as others. I checked the blurb on Amazon immediately and discovered, I had indeed written:

For Miss Elizabeth Smith, sharing her first kiss with the charming Lord Derek Creswell is nothing short of a dream come true…that is, until she is spotted by one of the most influential gossips of the ton.

As you can see, instead of writing town, I wrote ton, leaving out the sadly neglected ‘w’. My panicked heart slowed and I laughed and I laughed, then I laughed some more. My brother got a very brief history lesson in the matters of the London aristocracy.

The following day, my co-worker apprised me that I made exactly the same mistake. Apparently, the men I know do not read historical romances. :)

Now, in getting back to the other meaning of ton, I do have a ton of books. Seriously, a lot! So today, I’ve added 5 (five) more books to the mix, which means I’ll pick 6 winners instead of 5 today. Here’s what’s up for grabs today.  Is there a particular word(s) you think would trip up the average reader if they’re not familiar with that particular genre? Comment and enter to win 5 (five) books from Wednesday’s stash.

Now onto Wednesday’s Questions — yes they do get harder and plentiful as the week goes on  ;)

1. Just where do Margaret Mallory’s Highlanders return to in her “THE RETURN OF THE HIGHLANDERS” series?

2. In Christina Brooke’s excerpt of HEIRESS IN LOVE , what colour is the hero’s horse?

3. In Maggie Robinson’s MISTRESS BY MARRIAGE, what is Caroline Christie’s maiden name?

4. In Beverley Kendall’s ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE & SEDUCTION, at what age did Elizabeth first lay eyes on Derek?

Answer all 4 (four) correctly to be entered to win the ereader. Answer at least 2 (correctly) and you’ll be entered to win the eGift Certificates.

***Answers can be found in excerpts or downloads on author’s website or sample downloads on most etailer sites.

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWER on the blog. Email your answers to contests at theseasonforromance dot com and in the Subject line, please include Wednesday’s Answers.

Since it’s already mid-May and my novella, ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE & SEDUCTION will be released at the end of this month–so essentially a June release–my next contest will be for May/June. What am I giving away?

A Nook!

Yep, and there will be many different ways to get more entries. Stop by my website for entry details.

Contemporaries and their covers

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

When I started reading romances, I started with contemporaries. When I started writing, I also started with contemporaries. So while the books I’ve published have been historicals–my first love–the urge and the need to write a contemporary has always been there.

Suffice enough to say, last year I started writing a single title contemporary romance (I had tried writing strictly category romances before).  This book has all the emotional angst, sexual tension and heat as my historical romances except now my characters now have cell phones and iPads. Yippee!! But then I started thinking about covers and this is where I got completely stuck. What kind of cover do I want for this book? I’ve been so focused on historicals for so long, I’m not sure what kind of cover will convey my story.

So what do I do when I want readers’ opinions. I took to Twitter. And I did receive several cover suggestions. Now I need your help. Given what I told you about the book I’m writing, what type of cover do you think would best suit? Below are some of the types of covers suggested. Oh, and I’m also going to give away each of the books to random commenters.

So sexy it hurts

The Clinch - Flirtatious

The Clinch - Seductive

Picturesque and Scenic

Which of the covers best conveys a sexy, emotional contemporaray romance?
