As a Reader, Do you care about Flaws in Romance Books?

Monday, May 14th, 2012

As many of you know, I write, work a full-time job and run The Season Blog and website. It leaves me little time for…well anything else.   For the last couple months I’ve been looking for someone to take over much of the day-to-day work of the blog and I’ve found that person in Madison James. She’s a reader first and foremost with no aspirations to write. She’s also completely fascinated with the romance publishing industry as a whole.  Please give her a warm welcome. I know you’re going to find her as interesting, fun and as intuitive as I do.

As always, I’ll be around, still supplying lots of books for the giveaways and popping in when I have interesting tidbits to tell. Speaking of giveaways, I’ll be holding a big one for Memorial Day. Grand Prize winner will win 25 books. Details to come…

~*~*~

Thanks for that warm welcome Bev.

Hello The Season Readers, Madison here, I know that I have some big shoes to fill but I know I’m up for the challenge. Okay, The Season Readers let’s jump right in shall we?

I’ve recently just bought my first tablet and I have been in absolute heaven devouring new romance books and old favorites. As I found on my recent quest, the digital market includes traditional published books and self-published books.  What I have found, which I’ve never noticed before in reading traditional hard cover books, is the glaring mistakes that are hard to look over. One book in particular was so bad that I rated it and in my review pointed out all of the mistakes, hoping the author would read the review and take some of my suggestions to heart and correct them.

As a result, I began to wonder if others are having the same experiences like mine, and if you are, does it bother you?   Comment to enter win Nora Roberts’  THE LAST BOYFRIEND: In Print (U.S Residents only) or Digital.

She thinks he’s stuffy. He thinks she’s spoilt.
Then the gloves come off and so do their clothes!

For six years Violet Sutcliffe has known that Martin St Clair is the wrong man for her best friend. He’s stuffy, old before his time, conservative. He drives Violet nuts – and the feeling is entirely mutual. Then, out of nowhere, her friend walks out just weeks before her wedding to Martin, flying to Australia on a mission of self-discovery. Back in London, Violet finds herself feeling sorry for suddenly-single Martin. At least, she tells herself it’s pity she feels. Then he comes calling one dark, stormy night and they discover that beneath their mutual dislike there lies a fiery sexual chemistry.

It’s crazy and all-consuming – and utterly wrong. Because not only are they chalk and cheese, oil and water, but Martin once belonged to her best friend. A friend Violet is terrified of losing. What future can there be for a relationship with so many strikes against it?

~*~*~

There is nothing like a new Sarah Mayberry book. I actively anticipate the release of her books, which is why I was thrilled to learn she had a new “Blaze-type” book out called HER BEST WORST MISTAKE.

The hero and hero, Martin St. Clair and Violet Sutcliffe, were secondary characters in Sarah Mayberry’s Blaze, Hot Island Nights. And I remember when I was reading Hot Island Nights, I thought there had to be something simmering beneath the surface of the relationship between Violet and Martin. Their interactions were so volatile and fraught with so much disapproval and…tension. Well in HER BEST WORST MISTAKE readers discover all that tension was sexual in nature.

Violet never thought Martin was a good match for her best friend Elizabeth. Despite her misgivings, she intends to stand up with her when Elizabeth marries Martin, a man who has the blessing of Elizabeth’s wealthy grandfather—whom Martin works for.

Martin in turn, disapproves of Violet. He finds her too everything: too flamboyant, too flirtatious, too impetuous. He’s quite staid and has pulled himself up from extremely humble beginnings. Marrying Elizabeth is the icing on the top of his well-ordered world. Then she dumps him and jets off to Australia in search of her biological father. He’s stunned and not about to let the relationship go that easy but a trip to Australia finds Elizabeth already involved with another man and Martin finally realizes that they are over—and never meant to be.

Neither Violet nor Martin expects to see each other again. Elizabeth had been the person holding them together. But Violet realizes why Martin has always irritated her. It isn’t that she doesn’t like him—as she’d convinced herself—it’s because she likes him…at little too much. Her peace offering in the form of a bottle of schnapps really blows opening their “true” feelings for one another. Their relationship goes through several fits and starts before getting into a good rhythm.

I absolutely adored and loved this book. When I first met them in Hot Island Nights, I prayed Sarah would follow up with a story of their love affair. Thank goodness she did and HER BEST WORST MISTAKE exceeded my expectations. Far from this staid, stuck-in-the-mud man, Martin has a lot of passion buried inside of him. The tension between them is electric and when they finally get together, their lovemaking is hot with a capital H.

Violet has some unresolved issues that has to do with her family and Martin grows in such a way that he grows to understand what’s really important in life and what’s not—like being accepted by the country club elite. The one big sticking point is that Violet puts off telling Elizabeth that she’s now in relationship with her ex-fiancé. And let’s face it, she’s broken the unspoken rule of dating your best friend’s ex. It’s just not done. But alas, that all works out nicely bringing the book to a most satisfying ending.

I highly recommend HER BEST WORST MISTAKE, which is a steal at $2.99. It has it all: great conflict, taut sexual tension and two fabulous lead characters. And as far as sequel go, it’s a winner.

She was his savior

Banished from London for her reckless behavior, Lady Miranda Sinclair is robbed by a dashing highwayman en route to the country. By offering him a kiss in lieu of the jewels she had to leave behind, she commits the very type of act that caused her exile. When her dour guardians extend her punishment to performing charitable work at the local orphanage, she’s further tempted by the home’s owner, a provincial gentleman who stirs her passion in a most wicked way.

He was her downfall

Desperate to save his orphanage from financial catastrophe, Montgomery “Fox” Foxcroft leads a double life as a highwayman. The arrival of wealthy, well-connected Miranda, whose kiss he can’t forget, presents a lawful opportunity to increase his coffers. His problems seem solved—until she rejects his suit. Out of options and falling for the heiress, Fox must risk what principles he has left and take advantage of her wicked ways—even if it ruins them both.

EXCERPT

Miranda stopped short on the small landing outside the back door. Though dark enough for her eyes to deceive her, she felt certain someone stood not twenty feet away.

Reason told her to turn around, but reason was vastly overrated. Besides, the nape of her neck tingled with anticipation. Somehow she knew who lingered in the yard. She stepped into the soft grass. “Who’s there?”

“You promised we would meet again. I got tired of waiting.”

The highwayman.

He sauntered toward her, pausing a few feet away.

The cool night breeze stirred her hair. Miranda brushed a stray lock from her face. “Have you been skulking about the back entrances of every house in the district, or did you somehow know to find me here?”

“I have ways of finding what I need.” He leaned against a pear tree.

Miranda heard the smile in his voice. Go inside, her mind screamed. But other, less sensible parts of her body drove her forward until she stood before him. A mask covered his entire head, save his mouth and chin. Pity, for she dearly wanted to see his face.

“Did you say need?”

“Mmm. I did.” His deep voice sounded husky, alluring. He stepped closer, and she could feel the warmth of his body.

Her throat went dry. “You risk a great deal coming here.”

“Perhaps some things are worth any risk.” He tucked her hair behind her ear, his finger tracing along her sensitive flesh.

She pulled her dressing gown tighter against the chill night air. So many nights she’d walked in the garden, and she’d never considered she might encounter someone. Let alone her highwayman.

“It’s cold.” The highwayman pulled his cloak from his shoulders and wrapped it around her. Immediately, she was ensconced in delicious heat.

“But now you’re cold.”

He reached out and pulled her against him, his arms encircling her back. His legs were parted and he positioned her between them. “Now, I am not.”

She should rip his cloak off and run back into the house, but she couldn’t move. Couldn’t do anything but gaze up into his masked face. “Have you come to ransom me?”

His hands held her close. “That hadn’t occurred to me, but that is an excellent notion.”

Her heart beat a staccato rhythm in her chest. “If you aren’t here to take me away, why have you come?”

“For another kiss, perhaps.” His warm breath caressed her temple.

Miranda shivered. “I should go back.”

His lips brushed her cheek. The rough cotton of his mask grazed the side of her face, her ear. “I won’t stop you.”

She placed her hands on his shoulders, opening the cloak, leaving less between them. Then his mouth touched hers, and her knees went weak. She gripped him tighter, lest she tumble to the earth.

Her frustration and loneliness—yes, loneliness she now realized—faded in his kiss. Where she’d been bold during their previous encounter, she let him lead her, content to do his will. One of his hands cupped the back of her head as his lips parted over hers. His tongue swept against her, and she opened for him, welcomed him inside.

His kiss deepened, his hands holding her firm, steady, captive. Her head dropped back under his onslaught. Yes, command me. Desire pulsed through her body, throbbed between her thighs. Make me yours.

He trailed kisses along her jaw. Finding her earlobe, he nipped it, eliciting a shudder of longing that seemed to make her body curl in upon itself. His right hand tangled in her hair while his left coasted over her shoulder and settled just above her breast, the warmth of his bare palm heating her flesh through the thin cotton of her nightrail.

She did falter then, slumping against him with a faint moan. His hand moved down her body, cradled her hip, pulled her against his hardness.

A thump from the house froze their movements. He stood straight, breathed against her forehead.

She pushed his cloak from her shoulders and thrust it at him. “You have to go. I can’t be caught out here with you. Please!” She shoved at him, and he stepped back.

She pivoted and hurried to the house. At the door she turned to see if he remained.

His silhouette was recognizable next to the tree. “Until next time, then.”

She stepped inside and pulled the door shut. There couldn’t be a next time.

Release Day – An Heir of Deception is here!!!!

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Somewhere in my head I must have actually thought I’d get this book done. And I did. YAY!!!

Talk about getting close to a character. I admit wholeheartedly, I love Alex and I knew he was special since Sinful Surrender. I also knew I torture him and challenge him. I also knew his and Charlotte’s story would be very close to my heart. It’s been over three years, first anticipating his story and then writing it. I will sincerely miss him. :)

Last night, Amazon was the first to get AN HEIR OF DECEPTION up on their site and let me tell you it was sheer relief. B&N followed hours later–close enough to join the party.

Today is all about me celebrating its release with you. Some lucky commenter is going to win a $50 eGift Card to an online bookstore of their choice.

A man devastated by love

After three years of carousing and debauchery, Alex Cartwright, heir to the Duke of Hastings, has put his life back in order. Having embraced sobriety for two years, he has no intention of revisiting the past or risking his heart again. But the return of the very woman who introduced him to the darkest side of hell brings not only the painful, haunting memories of bittersweet love and abandonment, but the son he never knew he had…

A woman silenced by secrets

Threatened by the revelation of a secret that could destroy her family’s place in society and forever tarnish a dukedom, Charlotte fled England on her wedding day five years ago. Now, although it appears that secret is safe, when Alex discovers her other secret—their son—Charlotte has an altogether different battle ahead. She must now fight one love to hold onto the other—the man whose touch still makes her burn, for the child who is her very world.

Making Merry on Midsummer’s Eve by Leigh LaValle

Spring is in the air! As the sun shines brighter and the temperatures rise, I feel my blood stirring. Summertime, with her vibrant, sweaty nights, is coming soon. I love every season, but I find summer by far the sexiest. Indeed, I set my debut novel, THE RUNAWAY COUNTESS, during the hot, sultry summer of 1821.

Summer brings long days spent out-of-doors, succulent berries fresh from the garden, and boisterous open air festivals. The most popular summertime festival in Europe is the lover’s holiday of Midsummer’s Eve. Celebrated on the solstice, Midsummer’s Eve is a pre-Christian holiday with strong ties to fertility rituals. (You can see where I am going with this :) )

On Midsummer’s Day, revelers came together in an open field to celebrate. Flowers were gathered for decoration, participants engaged in games and activities (such as dancing around a maypole or competing in footraces) and villagers hawked their wares to other villagers.

But, it was as the sun set for the shortest night of the year that the true celebrations began. Under the light of the June moon (called the Honey Moon due to harvesting honey from the bees) inhibitions were cast aside and revelry echoed through the sultry night air.

Bonfires were lit and villagers leapt over the flames for luck. Musicians tuned their instruments and a procession of merrymakers, often dressed in costume, wandered through the festivities carrying lanterns. Wheels were set aflame and tossed into the air or sent rolling down hillsides.

To add to the allure of the night, courting couples were encouraged to wander into the woods. Together, they would look for faeries and pixies, and gather the herbs thought to be most potent on Midsummer’s Eve. Indeed, many couples would stroll off and not return for quite some time. (And, I should guess, without any herbs in hand or pixie sightings to report.)

A night for lovers, divination spells also existed on Midsummers Eve. A woman might glimpse her next lover by dipping cloth in rose water and letting it dry before the fire with salt. (The more I research the more I think spells were not needed to see one’s lover at all :) ) Or, a man might go to a churchyard with his sword and, turning nine times, recite “Here’s the sword; where’s the sheath?” Subtle, isn’t it?

I had a lot of fun researching the Midsummer’s Eve festival, and used many of the traditions in THE RUNAWAY COUNTESS. I added a pond for skinny dipping and hero and heroine who have been sparking off each other for weeks. Voila- a night is created full of mischief and romance. A night the hero and heroine will never forget.

Tell me, Dear Reader, which season do you find the sexiest? Do you love cozy winter nights? The awakening of spring? One lucky commenter will win a digital copy of THE RUNAWAY COUNTESS!

Blurb:  THE RUNAWAY COUNTESS

Once the darling of high society, Mazie Chetwyn knows firsthand how quickly the rich and powerful turn their backs on the less fortunate. Orphaned, penniless and determined to defy their ruthless whims, she joins forces with a local highwayman who steals from the rich to give to the poor.

Then the pawn broker snitches, and Mazie is captured by the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. A man who is far too handsome, far too observant…and surely as corrupt as his father once was.

Sensible, rule-driven Trent Carthwick, twelfth Earl of Radford, is certain the threat of the gallows will prompt the villagers’ beloved Angel of Kindness to reveal the highwayman’s identity. But his bewitching captive volunteers nothing—except a sultry, bewildering kiss.

And so the games begin. Trent feints, Mazie parries. He threatens, she pretends nonchalance. He cajoles, she rebuffs. Thwarted at every turn, Trent probes deep into her one vulnerability—her past. There he finds the leverage he needs and a searing truth that challenges all he believes about right and wrong.

It’s a Rachel Gibson eBook Bonanza!

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

You bet I was pleased as punch about this. I can safely say Rachel Gibson’s books are, hands down, my favourite single title contemporary romances. I have the lot of them in print and by April 1, 2012, I’ll have them all in digital too. Just want to share the good news. ;)

She’s 33, unmarried, and stuffed into a Bubble Yum pink bridesmaid dress. And the whole town wants to fix her up with anyone with a dental plan… Who’s going to rescue Sadie Hollowell now? Everyone in Lovett, Texas knows Sadie has always been a ‘notional’ kind of gal. She got a notion to leave town asap , and never visit her daddy (bless his heart). Now, she’s back and got the notion to invite a good-looking, hard-muscled, total stranger to her cousin’s wedding. Better a stranger than some of the losers she’s dated.

Vince Haven got his muscles the hard way—as a Navy SEAL in Afghanistan. He’s staying in Lovett to visit his crazy aunt—the proprietor of the local Gas N Go. Before he can get the heck back out of the small town, his aunt makes him an offer he can’t refuse. Maybe he’ll stick around Lovett for a while. Maybe he’ll make a ‘go’ of the Gas N Go. Maybe he’ll rescue Sadie out of that pink dress!

Don’t forget RESCUE ME, the first chapter in Gibson’s new series on men of the military, will be on-sale 5/29/12.
