Best and Worst Romantic Valentines Gifts

Woot!  It’s that time of year, almost time for the most romantic of holidays.  Valentine’s Day.  Or as some guys like to call it, the ticking time bomb on the calendar.  Oh no, I’m not saying all guys are Valentine’s duds.  Just, you know, a few I’ve dated in years past.  Which is why I love reading romances.  No duds here, just hot, sexy hunks who know how to show a girl a really good time on Valentine’s Day.  In my latest book, BREAKING THE RULES, my hero Max creates the ultimate perfect romantic Valentine’s for Sophia.  I can’t give away what it is, but I do think it would make the Best Romantic Valentine’s Gift list.

Since I couldn’t share Max’s Valentine’s treat, I thought I’d share my Best and Worst list…

The best and worst Romantic Valentines Gifts:

  • Best: Shiny Jewelry
  • Worst: Shiny Jewelry charged to YOUR credit card
  • Best: Sexy lingerie
  • Worst: Slutty lingerie
  • Best: Yummy handmade truffles
  • Worst: Cheap candy from the drug store
  • Best: A gift certificate for a couples massage
  • Worst: A court order for couples therapy
  • Best: A bouquet of favorite flowers
  • Worst: A convenience store rose in a plastic tube

How about you?  What were your best and worst Valentine’s Gifts?

To celebrate the release of BREAKING THE RULES, I’m giving away a backlist book of the winner’s choice to one commenter today!

BREAKING THE RULES BLURB:

What do you get when you mix a military hero on a mission with an independent artist hell-bent on proving something?  A battle that can only be won between the sheets.

Sophia Castillo is finally calling the shots in her life, and she’s determined to stay in charge.  The last thing she needs is a babysitter.  Not even a babysitter as sexy as US Army Sergeant First Class and EOD Squad Leader, Maximillian St. James.  But when someone is sabotaging her art gallery, she turns to Max for help.  When he proves to be a challenge to her independence, she lays down their relationship rules.  Hot sex, good times and a lot of laughs are all good.  Anything involving their hearts is strictly off limits.  Before they catch the vandal, Max and Sophia both have to decide just which rules they are willing to break, and how high a price they are willing to pay.

Be sure and check out my upcoming party!

Valentines Party!

I’m so excited that my tenth release, BREAKING THE RULES, is on shelves now!  I loved writing this story, because it focuses on something near and dear to my heart – a Military Hero (my own hero-hubby was in the Army).  Even more fun was making this a Valentine’s story, complete with hearts and flowers.

To celebrate, I’m having an invitation-only Valentine’s Day Party!  Including:

Kendall Grace gives us a Southern Exposure view

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Today, please welcome Kendall Grace to the blog! She’s a talented writer whose second contemporary romance, SOUTHERN EXPOSURE, is now available. If you’re looking for an amusing, emotional, passionate read with an ultra-sexy hero, this is definitely the book for you! Oh, and did I forget to mention I made her booktrailer!

It’s a Southern Thing

I hail from the South. Deep in the South—Georgia, to be specific. Although I’ve traveled extensively, I’ve never encountered the unique feel of the Southern states anywhere else. There’s just something about the air down here that makes everything seem more laid back, inspires a slower pace and a sense of welcome. Even living in a large Southern city as I do, I still see these bits of down-home hospitality that this region is known for. When I began writing, there was never a question of where my stories would take place. There’s nothing I love more as a reader than when an author’s setting becomes a character itself. And what better character is there than the South? Especially when you dig deep into the smaller regions of Georgia, Alabama and the Carolinas. These towns, and everyone in them, are just tales waiting to be told. Everyone is in everyone else’s business, and that leaves the door wide open for entertaining fiction, as far as I’m concerned. And what’s even more delicious is when you bring an outsider into one of these small towns. My personal favorite is an unsuspecting heroine being thrust into the South at the mercy of a Southern gentleman. She’s not going to stand a chance.

This was just the premise I used in my latest release from Ellora’s Cave, SOUTHERN EXPOSURE. Here’s the blurb:
.

A quick trip to visit her hospitalized mother is lasting longer than Anna had expected. About twelve weeks longer. It’s not that she isn’t used to taking care of her mom—Anna took over that job when her father died—but it’s a little stressful vying for partnership in her New York law firm from Liberty, Alabama. Fortunately the neighbor, a hot Southern charmer, is willing to help her take the edge off.

Since Trey breached her defenses, he and Anna have been burning up the sheets…and the side of the house…and the garden. The woman he’s coming to know is a far cry from the uptight lawyer he first met. And he likes the new Anna. A lot.

As her feelings for Trey deepen, Anna is torn between duty and desire…what she wants versus what she thinks she needs. Returning to New York, reverting to the formidable attorney her father molded, is the responsible thing to do.

Too bad that’s not the woman Trey wants…

What regions draw you as a reader? Do you like exotic destinations? Metropolitan cities? Historical settings? Are you drawn, as I am, to the unique dynamics of miniscule towns? I’d love to hear which books you’ve read that vividly paint the location until it becomes a living, breathing part of the story. Comment and enter to win a $15 Amazon Gift Certificate.

Chapter One

Anna Reed slumped against the wall by the front door of her mother’s cottage in Liberty, Alabama, pushing soaked tendrils of hair from her forehead with a shaking hand. She watched as the taxi’s taillights disappeared down the long drive and into the distance before searching blindly for the decorative pot where the house key was hidden. A flash of lightning crackled in the night sky and Anna jumped, clutching her chest and stumbling over what felt like a giant bag of potting soil. Her stiletto heel slipped between the boards of the front porch, snapping off when she tried to right herself.

She slipped the shoe off and groaned. Like her day hadn’t been sucky enough.

An emergency phone call to her office had launched her into a journey requiring three airports, two flights and a midnight taxi ride into Nowheresville. And now this. Anna glared at the mutilated shoe in her hand, grabbed its mate and tossed both over the porch railing with a disgusted sigh. She continued to feel around for the planter in the pitch-black night until her fingers brushed its smooth surface and she was able to extract the key from beneath. She unlocked the door and fumbled for the wall switch. Sighing in relief, she flipped it.

Nothing.

“Well that’s just great,” she muttered. “No power.”

She pushed the door closed with her hip and leaned against it, tears threatening to slip over her lashes. She shook her head, willing the negative emotions away. She was just tired—the panic that had seized her before learning her mother would make a complete recovery must have finally caught up with her, rendering her an emotionally fragile mess. Everything would seem different in the morning. She just needed some sleep before she went back to the hospital.

Anna locked the door and then took tiny steps to avoid tripping on anything as she made her way to the tiny spare bedroom. She unbuttoned her wet blouse and skirt as she went, letting the soaked garments fall to the floor. A clap of thunder roared in the angry night and Anna cringed as she slid her hand down the wall, searching for the bedroom. Her fingers met air and she eased through the open doorway. Reaching in front of her, she felt for the foot of the bed and groped the edge until she was able to drop on top of the mattress in a heap of exhaustion. Releasing a long sigh, she turned onto her side.

“You must be Annabelle.”

Anna’s hip met the floor with a thwack, her head bumping the wall as she tried to gain her footing. “Damn it!” She scrambled to her feet, her pulse rioting. “Who are—”

The beam of a flashlight illuminated the small room in faint light and she gasped at the stranger who stood on the other side of the bed wearing a smile and very little else.

She lurched forward and yanked her grandmother’s handmade afghan from the bed, curtaining herself. Meeting his gaze, she squared her shoulders. “Obviously you know who I am. So who the hell are you?”

He chuckled and rounded the corner of the bed, approaching her. She took a step back, her effort to escape thwarted by the wall.

“Sorry,” he said, his voice a low, lazy drawl. “I’m Trey Jacobs. I live next door.” He extended his hand.

Anna eyed him for a long pause before tucking the corner of the afghan under her arm and hesitantly accepting his gesture. “Anna Reed.”

He narrowed his eyes slightly, tilting his head to the side. “Your mama calls you Annabelle.”

“Yes, well,” she pulled her hand from his warm, calloused grasp and wrapped her arms around her torso, “I prefer Anna.”

“All right.” He moved toward her again and she took a clumsy step to the side and backed into the window, the blinds clattering against the glass. Anna heard a drawer in the bedside table slide open then the scraping sound of a match. A large pillar candle illuminated their corner of the room in a soft glow.

He turned to face her and she was met with her first full glimpse of Trey Jacobs. He stood before her in black boxer briefs, one hand resting lightly on his hip. His hair was mussed from sleep, falling in long layers around his face and just brushing his shoulders. It appeared to be a rich brown in the limited light and she could just make out dark stubble on his square jaw. Anna’s attention drifted to his chest, to the hard planes of muscle concealed beneath skin that looked as smooth and soft as suede.

He cleared his throat and her gaze darted back to his. He smiled liked the Cheshire cat, his eyes dancing in amusement. Anna snapped her mouth shut, which had apparently fallen open during her unabashed perusal of her mother’s neighbor. “Um, the hospital staff said a neighbor had been with my mom. Was that you?”

He nodded and sat on the edge of the bed, gesturing for her to join him. She glanced at his wide expanse of skin and the brief stretch of black fabric before focusing her attention on the painting over his right shoulder. “Do you want to get dressed or something?” she stammered.

A throaty laugh suffused her cheeks with heat. What in the hell was her problem? She was put under fire on a daily basis back home in New York. If it wasn’t opposing counsel or a squirrely witness, it was her demanding boss hovering over her as she attempted to scrape and claw her way to a partnership. Trey was only a man. She looked down at him, at the corners of his eyes crinkled in amusement, his full lips, the way he ran long fingers into his hair to brush it from his forehead.

Yes, he was just a man. And the Grand Canyon was just a crack.

Review: What I Did For a Duke

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

I just want to preface by saying this is singularly one of the best books I will read this year!! Not only is it an incredibly passionate romance, full of emotion and a FABULOUS hero and heroine, but it’s so incredibly funny in places, I nearly split my sides reading some of the scenes. If there is a not-to-be-missed romance this year, this is definitely one you won’t want to miss! – Bev

What I Did For a Duke
Author: Julie Anne Long
Publisher: Avon
Pub. Date: February 22, 2011
ISBN-13: 978-0061885686
Retail: $7.99

For years, he’s been an object of fear, fascination . . . and fantasy. But of all the wicked rumors that shadow the formidable Alexander Moncrieffe, Duke of Falconbridge, the ton knows one thing for certain: only fools dare cross him. And when Ian Eversea does just that, Moncrieffe knows the perfect revenge: he’ll seduce Ian’s innocent sister, Genevieve—the only Eversea as yet untouched by scandal. First he’ll capture her heart . . . and then he’ll break it.

But everything about Genevieve is unexpected: the passion simmering beneath her cool control, the sharp wit tempered by gentleness . . . And though Genevieve has heard the whispers about the duke’s dark past, and knows she trifles with him at her peril, one incendiary kiss tempts her deeper into a world of extraordinary sensuality. Until Genevieve is faced with a fateful choice . . . is there anything she won’t do for a duke?

~*~*~

A stunningly spectacular romance sure to be one of the best of 2011!

I can’t tell you how long it’s been since a book set my heart racing at a steady pace from beginning to end. What I did for a Duke not only had my heart racing, but my breath catching and my fingertips tingling. Brilliant characters, a near perfect romance, and a very well written story make this book one of the best books I have read in a very, very long time.

If you are not familiar with Julie Anne Long’s Pennyroyal Green series, I suggest that you find the previous four books and read them as soon as you can. Not because you have to in order to understand this book but because the series itself is very worth the read.

The Eversea’s and Redmond’s have had a silent war for as long as anyone in either family can remember. Something about a cow, a woman… Who knows! This series focuses on the young men and women of each family as they grow and find love in some very unusual and amusing situations. This fifth book focuses on the young Genevieve Eversea and the menacing Duke of Falconbridge. Genevieve’s brother Ian has wronged the Duke in an unmentionable way, an attempt to seduce his fiancée, and Alex Moncrieffe wants revenge. So, he arrives at an Eversea house party intending to seduce and abandon Ian’s broken hearted sister Genevieve.

Genevieve thinks she is in love with another man and Alex never wants to love again so there is not risk of attachment. What starts as a game for both of them turns into a love story with depth and passion that made me want to weep. Just for the record, I am not a crier. Usually…

The plot was simply wonderful, not complex but easy to follow and quick moving. The story has a great flow to it with absolutely no lag anywhere in sight and the most delicious tension between Alex and Gen. I could not stop turning pages.

Julie Anne Long has framed her characters perfectly, alternating the perspective from both the hero and heroine so that the reader gets a very intimate look at both of them. You feel their emotions; understand their thoughts as they drag you into the middle of the interesting dynamic of their blooming relationship.

Alex is one of those heroes that is just as dashing when he is brooding as when he smiles. He has a horrible reputation and his past is filled with bad rumors and innuendo. But beneath his ruthless façade lies a man deeply hurt and desperately in need of the right woman to charm him out of himself.

Genevieve is just the woman to do it, even if it is completely unintentional. She believes her heart to be set on a close friend but once this strong, understated girl gets close to the Duke everything changes. He shows her passion and love on a completely different level that she could have ever dreamed. The way that Julie Anne has written these two and the way their love grows, the reader can’t help but sigh with delight. The end is perfect, the story closing with the promise of the next book in the series coming soon to tempt the read. I don’t know who’s story it will be, but I can tell you it will be an auto-buy for me.

The love scenes were just right; heated, passionate, and filled with love and tension.

Overall, this is one of the best books I have ever read… hands down a must read!

Courtney Milan Gets UNVEILED

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Today I’m sitting down with the very talented Courtney Milan and chatting about her latest–and undeniably greatest–historical romance titled UNVEILED. This book was a February Top Pick and earned each and every one of its 9 1/2 Stars! Please extend a warm welcome to Courtney.

~*~*~

I read UNVEILED and absolutely loved it! I think it’s your best book to date and I’ve read you feel the same. What made this book different for you from PROOF BY SEDUCTION and TRIAL BY DESIRE?

Mostly, I’ve just grown as a writer. Between my debut and UNVEILED, I wrote more than half a million words. You have to learn something doing that! I’ve also come to understand what kind of stories are natural to me–I do better with stories where there is high, personal conflict between the hero and heroine.

But there’s one other thing: writing PROOF and then TRIAL convinced me that when I start a series I need to envision all the books at once. So when I was working on UNVEILED, I wrote pieces of both Mark and Smite’s books. That meant I had to see the story from everyone’s point of view, not just Ash’s and Margaret’s. That made the brothers feel more real to me than anything else.

Can you tell the readers a little bit about UNVEILED?

Lady Margaret loses everything when it comes out that her parents’ marriage was invalid: her dowry, her place in society, even her fiance. Then she meets a man who is willing to look past her ruin. He doesn’t see her illegitimacy; he sees what she can become. But he’s the man who destroyed her life by having her declared a bastard in the first place.

Click to read Top Pick review!

Ash, the hero of UNVEILED, was for me A Hero to DIE For! If you were forced to categorize him, where would he fall within the alpha and beta roles?

100% alpha. He is the kind of person who walks into a room, and immediately takes up the center of attention. People like him. They want to do what he wants them to do.

The only way you could arguably say that he is not an alpha is that he is actually a really nice guy–but last time I checked, you could be nice and still be a leader of men. Being an asshole doesn’t make you in charge. It just makes you an asshole.

I absolutely loved Margaret, the heroine. Why was she the perfect match for Ash?

Ash takes a sly pride in circumventing rules; Margaret knows what they are. This means that Margaret also knows what purpose rules function. In many ways, Ash needs someone to act as his conscience, and it’s through seeing how what he does affects Margaret that he understands how to go forward.

Can you tell us about UNCLAIMED, which will be Ash’s younger brother, Mark’s story?

Mark has written a book about chastity which has brought him popular acclaim–as well as enemies, who hire Jessica Farleigh, a courtesan, to seduce him and destroy his reputation. But Jessica finds that rather than seducing Mark, she’s falling for him….

In UNCLAIMED, Mark is a virgin. Did you have to consciously rein in on the testosterone when writing his character? *chuckle*

Ha! He’s been refraining out of principle, not out of lack of desire. Men that aren’t having sex don’t have less testosterone. Just remember: Before Sir Lancelot met Guinevere, he was a virgin, too.

I’m all for those dark and brooding kind of heroes, so I was immediately taken by Ash’s other brother, Smite. Can you tell us anything at all about his story?

Ah, Smite. He’s dark. He’s not…he’s not entirely brooding, see? He’s sarcastic, yet matter of fact. He’s harsh, but underneath, he has a really soft heart. You’ll see more of him in UNCLAIMED, and as you can imagine, Mark has a very different view of Smite than Ash does.

And I am afraid to say anything about his story until I get the okay from my editor. After all, she might not like it.

Which comes first for you, the characters or the story?

It doesn’t work that way. I have bits of characters floating in my mind. I have bits of story floating in my mind. At some point, character collides with story with sufficient force that they stick together; they then have enough mass to attract plot points and other characters. After some amount of accumulation, I know I have something that is a book. I have hundreds of plot points and bits of characters floating in my mind, waiting to come together. Neither comes first. It’s the marriage of story and character that has to happen.

If you could give any one particular piece of advice for aspiring authors, what would it be?

Edit more.

What’s the best thing about being published and what’s the thing you like the least?

The best thing about being published is fanmail. The worst thing about being published is that I’m kind of neurotic and so I end up refreshing Amazon to see if there are new reviews every twenty minutes, unless I switch off the internet–which I do, because it’s the only way I can get work done.

The hardest part of being an author for me is keeping track of names. In the first version of UNVEILED, one of Margaret’s brothers was Edmund, Edgar, and Edward–I could never remember which–and Margaret’s fake last name wavered from Lowell to Lowood. In fact, I don’t remember anymore which one I settled on!

I just handed in the almost-final version of UNCLAIMED and literally the day before I gave it to my editor, I realized I had three characters who had “George” as a first name: George Weston, George Lewis, and George Dickon. Whoops!

Names do not stick in my head.

Kimberly Frost Dishes Up Witches…Southern-Style

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Hi everyone,

Book #1

It’s wonderful to be here chatting about and celebrating the release of my third Southern Witch (SW) novel, HALFWAY HEXED .  For those not familiar with the series, it’s a blend of paranormal romance, mystery, and action/adventure. The main character, Tammy Jo Trask, is a young woman who’s descended from a long line of witches, but who didn’t seem to get a share of the family magic. In WOULD-BE WITCH (SW Book 1), however, Tammy finally comes into her powers. Unfortunately they don’t work properly, and all her spells go hilariously wrong. In BARELY BEWITCHED (Book 2), she learns why her magic malfunctions and taps into a different source of supernatural mojo.

Book #2

She also realizes along the way that her magic is synergistic with that of Bryn Lyons, a gorgeous lawyer/wizard to whom she’s majorly attracted. The trouble is that there’s a family prophecy that forbids her from interacting with anyone named Lyons, and this acts as a significant obstacle to their burgeoning romantic relationship.

As an author, it’s been a lot of fun to write the tug-of-war between Tammy Jo and Bryn when it comes to their romantic relationship. They’re powerfully attracted to each other, both magically and emotionally, and he wants to draw her as close to him as possible, but she has reservations.

Here’s a small excerpt of them together from the HALFWAY HEXED:

“We could prove it doesn’t have anything to do with you and me,” I said, my voice full of optimism.

“Even if it were theoretically possible to access the lost memories of lost souls, being able to draw out a specific memory? Extremely unlikely. The complexities of that kind of spell…”

“Right, but you’re brilliant, so you could probably write one that would work. Wouldn’t it be an interesting challenge for you?”

He laughed. “You’re about as subtle as a hurricane.”

“But what I lack in subtlety, I make up for in charm?” I asked with wide eyes.

“I’ll tell you what, I’ll do some research and I’ll think about it. If I decide it’s possible, we can negotiate what you’ll do for me in exchange for me writing the spell.”

“I could write recipes for thirty amazing desserts, better than anything you’ve ever tasted, and bring them over every day for a month.”

Bryn picked up the book. “That sounds very tempting, and yet somehow not likely to be what I’ll choose.” As he went up the ladder, I frowned at his back.

“I hope you’re not planning to—what’s the word I want?”

“Extort?” he offered innocently.

“Yes, actually.”

He smiled and put the Death book back on the shelf.

“I hope you’re not planning to extort things that shouldn’t be extorted,” I said.

He smiled. “What things are fair game for extortion?” he asked with mock curiosity.

“You know what I mean. Don’t pretend you don’t.” The man was a menace. A gorgeous menace, but still.

Ten Practical Lessons I Learned from Reading Romance, #2

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

by Jackie Barbosa

Last week, I wrote about how romance novels improved my understanding for and appreciate of history. Today, I want to talk about lesson #2, which is a little less general and a little more “OMG, how embarrassing would THAT have been?”

So, here we go:

Lesson #2: The Present Tense of “Misled” Is…

…not “misle.”

Okay, so this is truly one of my more embarrassing memories from my teenage years. I read a lot of romance novels, as I’ve mentioned, and in many of these books, the heroines in particular would reflect on how they had been “misled” by the hero. Whenever I encountered this word in the text, I would pronounce it in my head as “mi-zled” with a long “i”. I knew perfectly well what it mean–to be led astray, lied to, etc. But for months, if not years, it never occurred to me that I might be pronouncing it incorrectly.

I did, however, occasionally wonder why no one was ever “misled” in the present tense. Why did heroines never confront the heroes and say, “You are deliberately misleing me” or words to that effect? It did seem…odd.

Then, one day, it hit me. “Misled” was not the past tense of a verb I’d never seen in the present tense but of “mislead.” *headdesk*

All of this I relate to you because, to this day, I credit the relative frequency of the word “misled” in romance novels to the fact that I never in public read the word out loud the way I pronounced it in my head. Because that would DEFINITELY have been embarrassing!

So, are there any words you either learned the meaning of or how to pronounce because of its frequency in romance novels. Tell me all about it. Surely I’m not the only one out there with an embarrassment to share on this front!
