Christmas Traditions

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

It’s said that Christmas traditions as we know them started with the Victorians but one of the things about being a Regency author is that you know which traditions are pre-Regency and which come later.

Book #1 - October 2010

Christmas decorations in the house comprised branches of greenery, with rosemary and bay, laurel and mistletoe entwined. People would also dress themselves in garlands of greenery for the Christmas festival, so as well as looking festive they would also smell rather nice!

It was Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, who first introduced the Christmas tree to England. The tree must have been something of a fire hazard as it was lit by candles and decorated with small gifts of toys and sweetmeats. Queen Charlotte also introduced the idea of giving Christmas cards to friends and relatives although this was not widely done before the Victorian period.

Book #2 - November 2010

Christmas presents were exchanged on 6th December, St Nicholas’s Day, or a New Year gift on Twelfth Night, with a verse of poetry attached. If you belonged to the gentry you were expected to give charitable gifts to the poor on Christmas Eve and also put on a feast that night for your servants and employees, with a lot of ale and carol singing late into the night!

The Christmas Day festivities would start early (or probably simply carry on from the night before). William Holland, a vicar in Somerset, writes in his diary of 1801 that he and his family were woken at five in the morning by the church musicians serenading them outside, accompanied by carol singers:

Book #3 - December 1

“The singers at the window tuned forth a most dismal ditty, half drunk and with the most wretched voices.” It doesn’t sound a very nice way to be woken on Christmas Day!

On Christmas Day the rich would probably dine on lamb and they would eat their turkey on Twelfth Night. Turkeys were transported to London on the stagecoach from Norfolk. William Holland dined on sprats (fish) and a woodcock on Christmas Day and considered that quite a feast. Mince pies and Christmas cake were also a feature of the menu although the Christmas Cake was known as the Twelfth Cake and was also eaten on Twelfth Night. I like the idea of having a party on Twelfth Night!

The Christmas holidays lasted for several weeks because of the time it took to travel to visit family and friends. Entertainments during the Twelve Nights of Christmas would include parties, balls and ice skating, with games of charades and lots of singing Christmas songs around the open fire. It all sounds wonderfully cosy and it must have been lovely to have the whole family together. Many of the early years of the nineteenth century were very snowy at Christmas too, which would make it feel very festive!

Happy Christmas!

One aspect of Irish culture I loved researching for Duchess of Sin was Christmas!  No one loves a good holiday party more than the Irish.  Christmas has always been a time filled with visiting, dancing, and music, and good food.  I learned a lot about Irish Christmas traditions as a child in my grandparents’ house, which was always a wonderful time.  My grandmother would make plum puddings and ginger cakes, put up holly wreaths and mistletoe kissing boughs, and play Irish Christmas music all the time (I listen to The Chieftain’s Christmas CD every year!).

She also kept a candle in the window (albeit an electric one that wouldn’t start a fire!), and when I asked her why she told me what her mother told her.  The candle was a symbol of welcome to Mary and Joseph as they traveled looking for shelter (and in time of the Penal Laws could also be a sign of a safe place to say Catholic Mass).  One tradition said the candle should be lit by the youngest member of a household and only extinguished by a girl named Mary.

Nollaig Shona Duit (Merry Christmas) everyone!  I hope you enjoy Anna and Conlan’s story as much as I did.  For more information, excerpts, recipes, etc, please visit my website at http://laurelmckee.net.  And if you’d like to create a bit of a traditional Christmas for yourself, here is my grandmother’s old recipe for plum pudding (she used to say it was best to make this a year in advance and let it “mellow,” but she would mostly start it at the beginning of Advent…)

Ingredients

Fruit Mixture (to be made 4 days ahead)
1 pound seedless raisings1 pound sultana raisins½ pound currants
1 cup thinly sliced citron
1 cup chopped candied peel
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp mace
½ tsp nutmeg
¼ tsp ground cloves
¼ tsp allspice
¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 pound finely chopped suet (powdery fine)
1 ¼ cups cognac

Pudding

1 ¼ pounds fresh bread crumbs
1 cup scalded milk
1 cup sherry or port
12 eggs, well beaten
1 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
Cognac

Preparation

Blend the fruits, citron, peel, spices and suet and place in a bowl or jar.  Add ¼ cup cognac, cover tightly, and refrigerate for 4 days, adding ¼ cup cognac each day.
Soak the bread crumbs in milk and sherry or port.  Combine the well-beaten eggs and sugar.  Blend with the fruit mixture.  Add salt and mix thoroughly.  Put the pudding in buttered bowls or tins, filling them about 2/3 full.  Cover with foil and tie it firmly.  Steam for 6—7 hours.  Uncover and place in a 250 degree oven for 30 minutes.  Add a dash of cognac to each pudding, cover and keep in a cool place.

To use, steam again for 2-3 hours and unmold.  Sprinkle with sugar; add heated cognac.  Ignite and bring to table.  Serve with cognac sauce.

I’m also giving away an autographed copy of DUCHESS OF SIN. Comment to enter to win!

Who tops your HERO list?

Friday, November 26th, 2010

I’m terribly picky when it comes to selecting books. I’m even pickier when it comes to books I actually enjoy (seriously, ask anyone who knows me, I can be a pretty daunting critic). I recently began to think that as I get older, I become more jaded. I love great writing and even more, I love a great story. If I can have both in the same book, I’m in heaven.  I was heaven just the other day…

I recently read a book that reminded me why I read romance–why I love the genre. The prose is this book sang and had characters whom I ached for, loved, felt their every emotion…they made me love and care for them in every way. This book truly moved me. It’s been days since I finished and I’ve already gone back to read my favourite parts several times. In another month or so, I will go back and read it again, cover to cover.

What made this book so special apart or inclusive of the things I mentioned above? The Hero. His name is Ash Turner. The heroine, whom I loved dearly also, is Lady Margaret. The book is titled UNVEILED and the author who penned this beautiful book is Courtney Milan. UNVEILED won’t be available until February 1, 2011 but I was lucky enough to get my hands on the egalley and promptly devoured it.

After reading and reveling in every aspect of this book that made it such an emotional, so finely rendered, beautiful historical romance–and after adding Ash Turner to my mental Top Hero list–I thought it would be fun to write them down.

They are not in any particular order but here’s my Heroes Who Do It For Me list:

Ash TurnerUNVEILED - Courtney Milan
Marcus, Lord WestcliffIT HAPPENED ONE AUTUMN - Lisa Kleypas
Logan ScottBECAUSE YOU’RE MINE – Lisa Kleypas
Sebastian, Lord St. VincentDEVIL IN WINTER - Lisa Kleypas
Zach Zemaitis - NOT ANOTHER BAD DATE – Rachel Gibson
Jackson Lamott ParrishDAISY’S BACK IN TOWN – Rachel Gibson
Rome MatthewsSARAH’S CHILD - Linda Howard
Camden Saybrook, Lord TremainePRIVATE ARRANGEMENTS – Sherry Thomas
Hadrian Braxton-Lowell, Duke of Clayborough - SCANDALOUS LOVE – Brenda Joyce
Alec Carrick, Baron SherardNIGHT STORM – Catherine Coulter

That’s only ten in an extensive list of fabulous heroes (Michael StirlingWHEN HE WAS WICKED – Julia Quinn comes to mind). Heroes who made the story really work for me because, as I’ve discovered, if I can’t fall in love with the hero, I can’t love the book.

So I’ve shown you mine, it’s your turn. Who’s tops on your hero list?

The Highs and Lows of Publication

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

I’m going to start off this post by saying I’m one of the lucky ones. And in lucky I mean, I wasn’t one of those authors who laboured over one or even several books for years and years before I finally sold. I sold the first manuscript I ever completed.

I started SINFUL SURRENDER on November 1, 2006 and completed the first draft the first week of January 2007. I shopped for an agent, polished up the book, query and synopsis and entered contests the better part of 2007. I was on my final round of revisions for A TASTE OF DESIRE when Hilary Sares called Sept 4, 2008 and made an offer for SINFUL SURRENDER. In the publishing world, that is a relatively short time to get one’s book published by a traditional New York publisher.

In essence, no one need feel sorry for me. My dream of publication came true in a relatively short time and with my first complete novel no less. No one has to tell me how fortunate I am and how the stars aligned so nicely for me. But to my credit, I was singularly determined. I researched the Victorian era and wrote like a demon for 18 solid months. It paid off I’m happy to say.

The story certainly doesn’t end there and here is definitely when I start coming down from that high of selling. Marketing and Promoting. Two of the more daunting words I’ve ever seen and more daunting and painstakingly difficult task I’ve ever undertaken. In case you haven’t heard, SINFUL SURRENDER never made the NYT bestseller’s lists. It never made any list. I will go so far as to assure you that most of the historical romance reading public doesn’t know the book exists.  While I have yet to receive a royalty statement (it should be coming in December/January) I think I can safely say, for the ones who know it’s out there, a great number of them chose not to purchase it.

Suffice it enough to say, it’s not enough to have your book published, you have to actually sell…well enough to make a publisher want to buy more of your books. I had a two book deal so A TASTE OF DESIRE will appear–in much reduced numbers this time around–in your local (I hope) Borders and Barnes and Noble book stores. For those who would like to purchase it, you might have to hunt it down just a bit.  I know, unlike SINFUL SURRENDER, I won’t see it on my local Walmart shelves. Of course I hope it does well but I’m a realist and I know it’s going to be an uphill battle. There isn’t a big marketing push behind it and I’m a relative unknown. But at least I’m not naive about the whole thing…publishing is not an easy business. For me, although writing the books was no walk in the park, getting published was easy compared to staying published, for that truly is the hard, hard part.

My road to publication has hit its highs and I’ve definitely hit the lows. Currently, I don’t have anything under contract. But as a writer, even these lows won’t deter me because I always have a plan b, c, and d. I can’t ever stop trying. I won’t stop writing because writing is the sort of thing that’s in my blood, and while the urge–need to write may not burn as bright all the time, it still burns. I have so many stories I’m desperate to tell–Alex Cartwright, the last hero in my trilogy, needs to have his story told. And it will be told…someday.

So for all you aspiring authors keep writing no matter what. And when you get that first contract, jump for joy and celebrate. Savour that once in a life time thrill of that first sale. And then come up with a wickedly good marketing plan to get your name and book out there. Network. Network and then Network some more. It’s enormously helpful if you have your publishing company behind you and pushing your book.  When it’s all said and done, the reading public will have the last word. With a great book and great marketing and promotion, you’ll leave them clamoring for more.

I was told by a publishing insider that in this economic time (recession) readers are sticking with their tried and true favourite authors and are unwilling to try out new authors. Would you say that’s a fair statement? Are you wary when buying a new author?

The Season December issue is up!

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

Yep, it’s already that time. Okay, so it’s past that time by about a day but what matters is that the December issue is finally up on the site.

WHAT’S NEW

Month-At-A-Glance:

Have you noticed that the releases aren’t grouped in any particular order except by genre. That’s because I put the pages together as I get the reviews in OR if I received the book early enough to determine that I should have a review for it by the go live date.

Here’s the problem with my no order presentation–no one knows what book is on the next page or what rating it received until they stumble upon it. Hey, I’m easy, I don’t mind that kind of surprises but some folks don’t. So for my visitors who want to see the books based on their rating so they can cherry pick the reviews they want to read, I’ve added a Month-At-A-Glance page to all the genres (Mystery will be coming later once I start getting the December reviews for them).

Historical Month-At-A-Glance

UNFORGIVABLE ~ Laura Griffin

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Thanks so very much for inviting me to join you at The Season! I’m in a happy holiday mood because my new novel, UNFORGIVABLE, is about to hit the shelves, and I’m celebrating the release by giving away a free iPod. (keep reading for details!)

This is the third romantic suspense novel in my Tracers series, which features a cuttingedge crime lab where forensic experts, known as Tracers, team up with homicide detectives to solve the very toughest crime. Publishers Weekly called the series “high-octane” and said this about UNFORGIVABLE:

“The science is fascinating, the sex is sizzling, and the story is top-notch, making this clever, breakneck tale hard to put down.”

Wow, was I excited to get that feedback! As a writer of romantic suspense, I’m always trying to strike the right balance between the mystery and the love story, so it is especially gratifying to me when someone compliments both those aspects of a book.

Readers often ask me if they should read the Tracers books in order, and I tell them it isn’t necessary. The characters overlap, but each suspense plot stands on its own, so go ahead and dive right in!  Here is a quick glimpse of UNFORGIVABLE:

UNFORGIVABLE
Author: Laura Griffin
Publisher: Pocket Books
Pub. Date: November 30, 2010
ISBN-13: 978-1439152966
Retail: $7.99

At first, Mia Voss thinks it’s just bad luck when her already lousy day ends with a carjacking. But what seems like a random incident is followed by another sinister episode. A DNA expert, Mia has made it her mission to put away vicious criminals. Suddenly, she’s become the target of one. And the only way to protect the people she loves most is to deliberately destroy her reputation and risk letting a killer walk free.

Once, Mia trusted Detective Ric Santos. That was before Ric let his turbulent past ruin his chances with Mia, the sexiest, most intriguing woman he’s ever met. But he can tell when she’s lying—and when she’s scared. The key to catching a sadistic madman lies within a long-buried cold case that has haunted Mia for years. Only she can uncover the truth, but first, Ric will have to get her to entrust him with her secrets . . . and her life.

Ric and Mia are two of my favorite characters, and I hope you will enjoy their story of love and danger in UNFORGIVABLE. To commemorate this release, I am posting “Mia’s Playlist” on my web site and giving away an iPod to one lucky winner.
