The Best of the Best ~ Romance Books Websites

Friday, February 12th, 2010

In the course of keeping up The Season sites, I peruse a lot of websites. There are some authors I absolutely adore because their websites are lovely and always up-to-date. They have their covers and blurbs displayed and easily accessible. The same goes for publishers. I love a website that is user-friendly, attractive, and has a solid search feature.

For me, there are only a couple publishing websites that meet  and surpass these standards. The first is www.eHarlequin.com. Let me show you why I believe the IT team that put together and manages this site has it right. Let’s start with the front page:

The front page is clean, the links clearly visible and properly identifiable. Absolutely no guess work as to where the links go. Every single line is prominently displayed at the top and then below, broken down into categories (Passion, Erotic, Inspirational, Young Adult etc.).  I love the animated or flash ad usually running at the top in the middle ad space. I also love it that they give you the Top Ten Bestsellers and that the list is updated daily. I’m definitely one of those people that like to check out what books other readers find interesting and are purchasing.

Harlequin always seems to be running some savings or another, and they are featured down the right side of the page. Did you know that you can get 3 (three) Silhouette Desires for $9.99 until the end of the month. ;)

Here you see they are displaying the Top Ten Bestsellers and the Top Ten Budget books. It’s lovely because each book has a corresponding link. And as you can see from the drop down menus, they are, like all the other links, straight forward and clearly identifiable. As you roll over each category, it is high lighted as, in this case, is Harlequin Historicals.

Here’s the page I love the most. Why? Because it allows me to get all the covers and blurbs in one place. The layout is exactly as it should be. It also has the price and links to the excerpt. Other categories like Presents, Desire, and Blaze has a Browse Inside feature for all the books. That’s the only thing I wish they had for the Historicals. Now from this page I can just click the ADD TO CART button to add the selected book.

Voila! I’ve just added Sold and Seduced to my shopping cart. Canadian residents can easily change the purchase to reflect Canadian currency with a click of a button. Applying a coupon is easy and like every other company, they want to sell you more  before you close the deal so below are book covers for other books they suggest you might like. It’s all clean, attractive, and user-friendly. Love it!

The Search Feature is always a toughie. It usually retrieves a whole plethora of stuff. Harlequin does pretty well here, though. As you can see, I searched for Sarah Mayberry and thankfully, Sarah’s books came up first. I see that two Home For the Holidays came up but I also see they’re not the same. Each is priced differently. But when you add them both to your shopping cart, the price is the same. I’m assuming there was a sale going on at one time and the price for that is still in the system. It’s not flawless, but it is retrieving the information you want.

The only thing I would have liked to have for the search is that it would do literal searches. Which means, if I type, “Sarah Mayberry”, it would ONLY pull up Sarah Mayberry and nothing else. Sarah Elliott would not appear or any other authors or titles with Sarah in it.

Now if you’re an aspiring author, the Submissions Guidelines page is clear and concise. They have links to the web version AND the .PDF version of the guidelines for every single line. The guidelines are so specific and so clear, I’m sure they don’t have to field a lot of questions after someone reads them.

Here’s the guidelines for Harlequin Historicals. I love that they give you all the editors who work on the line. They have the address for the location under Writing Guidelines. I wish they would also include it on the individual series guideline pages. It would be just be more convenient.

The site features so much more than I can adequately cover in this post. I love the Podcasts. It’s so nice to have actual voices discussing what they are looking for for particular lines. I find them  informative above all else, but also more entertaining than a dry read.

Harlequin also hosts many different Forums and Blogs in their Harlequin Community. There is also a separate website for their ebooks, eHarlequin eBook Store, which operates in exactly the same manner.

There’s really just tons of stuff to see and experience on www.eHarlequin.com so I won’t keep you. ;)

Next time I’ll be taking a look at Avon Book’s website. Another fine example of website building with readers, aspiring authors, and authors in mind.

Who’s selling what, and are you buying?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Before I begin this post, I want to say Happy Birthday and heapings and heapings of love to my ‘little guywho turned 7 today. This momentous event means  lunch (his favourite, McDonald’s) with him at his school and cupcakes for everyone! Real party is on the weekend.

Now, back to book talk.  I started contemplating this question last night. Which publishing house do you purchase most of your historical romances from? I must admit, when I first started reading single title, I didn’t really notice or care. I definitely knew Harlequin because of their categories (which I consumed at unparalleled speeds), but other than them, for the longest while I only cared about the author. Now, that isn’t to say that I don’t anymore. Oh, I very much do. However, I have noticed over the years that my go-to, instant-buy author list is getting much shorter. So short in fact, I probably only have 3 or 4 on that list right now.

Some of the authors I absolutely adored, have switched publishing houses, or have taken to writing in a different sub-genre, or have gone mainstream. Some of the authors who have switched publishing houses and still continue to write historical romances… their books are just not the same anymore. Sure it could be the passing of time that has made the difference (their writing has changed), but it also could be a new publishing house, a new editor, a new set of expectations. Of course I can never know which of those things it really is, I just know something is very different about their stories and my connection to them.

That’s what got me thinking as I stared at the mountain of books in my closet last night. Do I have an implicit trust in a particular publishing house to deliver quality, engaging stories by great authors? Or is my sole trust with that particular author to do so no matter which publishing house they are with? Once upon a time I would have said, my sole loyalty is to the author. My view has shifted somewhat since then as I think it falls somewhere in between, although more weight still goes to the author. For new authors, I would say more weight goes to the publishing house. I see trends in certain publishing houses and always take note. If I read  books of 2 (two) new authors from Publishing House A and I don’t particularly like them, more often than not I won’t pick up another new author from them unless the book comes highly recommended by someone I trust and knows my tastes.

Lately, I’ve been hearing from readers, friends, fellow authors, Publishing House A only publishes these kinds of stories, or Publishing House B only likes authors with this particular kind of voice. Yesterday, one of my writer friends said that a reader told her how refreshing her book was as she was used to reading a certain type of books from Publishing House C. As a writer, I find all of this information very interesting and eye-opening. Are readers taking note of this too?

What about you? If you were to peruse your bookshelf, which publisher dominates your historical romance collection? And if there is a particular publisher that you believe is doing a great job at selecting and putting out quality, engaging stories from good authors, let me know who that is for you.

Which publisher dominates your historical romance bookshelf

Guest Review ~ For Your Arms Only

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Lynette Curtis, a frequent visitor of the blog, has been kind enough to review Caroline Linden’s, For Your Arms Only and offer up her two cents.

~*~*~

For Your Arms Only
Author: Caroline Linden
Publisher: Avon/HarperCollins
Pub. Date: November 24, 2009
ISBN-13: 978-0061706479
384 pages

He’d never been shot by a woman . . .

He was once a distinguished army officer, a man of honor and heroism. But that was before Alexander Hayes was wrongly accused of treason. Forced to abandon everything he held dear, Alec became a spy for England in an attempt to clear his name. His latest commission sounds simple: locate a retired soldier gone missing. But it also sends him back home, to a family who’d thought him dead for five years—and a woman who’d like to shoot him.

Everything Cressida Turner’s ever heard about Alec tells her that he’s a traitor of the worst kind, and yet this enigmatic, infuriating, and utterly captivating man may be the only person she can trust—and the only one who can find her missing father. With nowhere else to turn, she reluctantly joins forces with Alec, unprepared for both the dangerous secrets that threaten them and the relentless passion that drives them into each other’s arms.

Lynette’s Two Cents:
The beginning of For Your Arms Only was slow and dragged. It took me two and a half days to read the first one hundred or more pages of this book. Despite the awesome writing (I mean Ms. Linden’s talent just oozes from the page) I wouldn’t have picked For Your Arms Only back up again if I hadn’t promised to review it. However, the middle and end were fabulous. I’d defiantly read this author again, though it’ll be a library read at first. I live in Michigan, the worst economic state in the U.S., so I only purchase books I know I will re-read (I’m a big re-reader). If I read one or two more of her books that I really liked, she’d go on my must-buy list. I can see Caroline Linden as an author who will blow me away eventually, her writing was that good. It was just the story and heroine that bothered me.

Plot: There is a lot of plot inside For Your Arms Only, which normally is a good thing. However, in my humble opinion it felt as if it took way too long to set-up the story. There was too much to focus on, that I ended up losing interest. Near the end, all the plot threads pulled together but I thought they should’ve been woven in more effectively in the beginning so that the reader would care more and not stop reading.
a. Example 1. I had a serious WTF moment in the book. Since it’s back-story I can tell you without spoiling anything. Alexander is accused of being a traitor. Everyone (including Wellington) believes he betrayed the English to the French, yet he is given a job as an English spy. AFTER EVERYONE BELIEVES HE’S A TRAITOR. HUH! That lost all credibility to me. Maybe it’s because of what I do day-to-day on my job, but I lost faith in the author from the moment I read that in the prologue. Everything was explained quite well later on, but that wasn’t until Chapter Eight (Chapter Eight starts on page 91) that the explanation was given. So I spent ninety-one pages thinking this defies credibility. I wish the explanation would’ve been weaved in a little earlier, maybe infuse the information into the prologue or made Chapter Eight the prologue.
b. Example 2. Ms. Linden did a great job with Alexander the hero. I adored him, which is why I kept reading despite some of the problems I had with this book. One thing that bothered me is that when he returned home after five years. NOTHING was said about his return from the dead. No family dramas, nothing. Not a hint of anger from the man who thought he’d inherit. NOTHING. No one broke the rule that we just don’t talk about it, even when it’s just within family. Come on now. I know the English are supposed to have a stiff upper lip, but this was a little too much. I kept waiting for the fight to erupt. It did erupt eventually with his sister Julia but it was to the middle/end of the book. Waiting for something so obvious to happen distracted my reading experience.
c. Example 3. Minor issue that comes not from knowledge of the era but from reading romance novels from the time I was eleven years old. A single woman (even a spinster) going on an overnight trip with a single man during that time-period? It just didn’t seem right to me, felt it was just a device to throw them together. However, I could be wrong and often am.

Characters: I didn’t like the heroine. She got on my last nerve until (you guessed it) the middle/end of the book. Alexander was sent to help her, and she acted like he had the plague. Come on girly. Her justification wasn’t even that she didn’t trust him because he was branded a traitor. She had no reasoning for her dislike and it annoyed me. I also felt that the author spent a little too much time in the beginning channeling Elizabeth and Jane Bennett for Cressida and her sister Cassie. But that’s just my opinion. Again, this changed as the book went along.

Sex Scene: I am so not one of those people who say they skip the sex scenes. Frankly, I think they’re lying. But that’s just me. Me, I read the sex scenes with a highlighter and pencil in my hand so I can scribble notes in the margins. :) Different strokes for different folks. Having said that, this sex scene seemed out of place, it read like I was suddenly transported into an erotic romance novel. I read erotic romance novels, so that didn’t bother me, but the tone seemed wrong and didn’t fit the Cressida I had pictured in my mind. The tough, no nonsense, feisty (Elizabeth Bennett type) heroine. It’s like she turned into a totally different character. That scene didn’t fit tone of the rest of the book.

I know it seems like I didn’t like the book. I did. Once again, the middle and end were great. Ms. Linden can describe a scene that is so vivid that I feel like I’m there. Once the plot issues were ironed out, I was able to sit down and enjoy the story, so that just make me wonder what she’d do with a different book. I can’t wait to see.

Rating Scale:
A – Top 20 in subgenre. I will keep it and re-read it and it will be my precious
B – I’ll re-read my favorite parts
C – Good but I won’t re-read
D – Not my thing
E- I finished it.
F – I did not finish it.

Final Grade: C-

Does anyone remember that Spam jingle from way long ago?

Kids and Spam go together like going fishing with your older brother.
You can’t find one without the other.

Well I was reminded of jingle as I was putting together this paranormal and historical giveaway. I mean don’t most paranormal feature someone from another time, who has lived like say three hundred or so years ago? That’s historical right? Just an inane aside as I was humming that tune when I started doing this post.

Anyway, today I have 2 (two) books to giveaway. The first is a copy of BITTEN BY CUPID, an anthology by NYT bestselling author Lynsay Sands and newcomers Pamela Palmer and Jaime Rush. Just perfect for Valentine’s Day, ladies. ;) But if you’re looking for something with less bite, I also have NYT bestselling author Stephanie Laurens’ THE ELUSIVE BRIDE, the second book in her Black Cobra series.

A new addition

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I have no big post today because I have much writing to do and I’m working on the March/April issue of The Season. But I thought I’d do a quick post to show off the new addition to The Season. Bookmarks!

Showing no bias, of course, I think they are very very pretty. ;) My son certainly likes them more than he does my Sinful Surrender bookmarks. He told me that my bookmarks are very purple but The Season bookmarks have lots of colours and are very pretty. Got to love a child’s honesty, and in this case I must agree with him. The original design was done by CrocoDesign and I modified it some with a new background, text placing, and colours.

In other news, I’m looking for excerpts for Excerpts Thursdays. And I’m looking for suggestions for a really sexy contemporary romance with lots of wonderful tension that’s all about the hero and heroine’s relationship. It can be either a current or upcoming release.

Check back tomorrow when I’ll be giving away a paranormal and a historical romance. Have a great day!

Anticipation

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Nope, I’m not talking ketchup or Carly Simon’s song. Last night I tweeted to get a sense of what historical romances coming out this year are being anticipated with bated breath. And there were plenty. I’m going to start out with the 5 (five) that came at me first, then every week or two I’ll continue with my Anticipation posts. The books will come from the responses I receive whenever I happen to ask the question on Twitter.

I’m going to start with the one I chose and the book I read and  ADORE. It’s absolutely wonderful. It’s the kind of book I’ll read over and over again, until the pages are dog-eared and worn. Suffice enough to say I’ll need an electronic copy of this book too. What gem am I speaking about? It’s Maggie Robinson’s fantastic debut, MISTRESS BY MISTAKE. I’m going to say this, you don’t want to miss this one. It is a KEEPER as well as the first in a series of 4 (four) books. What does that mean? It’s means there’s more for me to anticipate and gobble up the second each hits the book stores. Pre-order this one now.  Maggie Robinson is definitely an author to watch.

Mistress By Mistake
Author: Maggie Robinson
Publisher: Kensington/Brava
Pub. Date: April 27, 2010
ISBN-13: 978-0758250995
352 pages

Scandal is only the beginning…

Charlotte Fallon let her guarded virtue fall once—and she’s paid dearly for it ever since. She swore she’d never succumb to men’s desires again. But even a village spinster’s life miles from temptation can’t save her from a sister with no shame whatsoever. Or a heart that longs for more, whatever the cost…

Sir Michael Bayard found more than he expected in his bed when he finally joined his new mistress. He’d fantasized about her dewy skin and luscious curves, assured her understanding that what passed between them was mere dalliance. But he didn’t expect the innocence and heat of her response in his arms. Nor her surprisingly sharp tongue once she was out of them…

A few days of abandon cannot undo the hard-learned lessons of a lifetime. Nor can an honest passion burn away the restraints of society’s judgments. Unless, of course, one believes in nonsense like true love…

~*~*~

Katiebabs offered up this next one, er, actually the next two. I’m going to start with Meredith Duran’s WICKED BECOMES YOU. This was one that wasn’t even on my radar, but I loved Meredith’s BOUND BY YOUR TOUCH so I knew I needed to give it a looksy. I was not disappointed. This one immediately jumped onto my TBB pile. It’s exactly the kind of storyline I adore. Pre-order this one too, ladies, it sounds like it’s going to be a naughty, thrilling ride. ;)

Now if you’re into a bit of paranormal in your historicals, Katiebabs also suggests Gail Carriger’s CHANGELESS. From what I heard, Gail’s first book, SOULLESS took the reader audience by storm and it would appear she’s determined to level us with this next book in her Parasol Protectorate Series (got to love the series name!). I don’t do this often, but I may just take a walk on the dark side.

The final book for today, Connie Brockway’s THE GOLDEN SEASON, was offered up by kaligolf (her Twitter name). Now, to be honest with you, while I have heard of Connie Brockway I’ve never read any of her books. But after reading the back cover blurb of THE GOLDEN SEASON, I know exactly where I’m going to start. I love a story when the hero and heroine are operating at cross purposes. And the good thing about this book is we don’t have to wait for it, it was released yesterday. Ladies, I say we go forth and purchase.

Authors Under the Radar ~ Chloe Harris

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Who is Chloe Harris? Many of you may not know because she’s relatively new. So new in fact, her debut historical, SECRETS OF SIN only officially releases today. Are you wondering if she is truly an author under the radar. Yes, she is and I’ll tell you why. Some debut authors are lucky enough to have much fanfare to herald the release of their debut novel. You’ve heard their name and heard rave reviews about their book long before it even hits the shelves. Not so in this case and for most debuts. And because SECRETS OF SIN is a very sexy trade book it has an even more difficult time finding a wider audience as it isn’t carried in places like Walmart, K-Mart or Target.

So once again, who is Chloe Harris? Chloe Harris is really the pseudonym for two writers, Noelle Henderson and Barbra Kolten, who’ve joined forces to write intriguing and sexy stories.

A quintessential eccentric southerner, Noelle seems to find a story in almost everything. Ever ambitious to change her stars, she has a degree in Communications.

Barbra lives together with her cat (‘Princess Mimi’), who naturally isn’t very happy that she is spending so much time on writing. But this folly of the living can opener with opposable thumbs is mostly tolerated.

To celebrate the release of Chloe’s sexy debut historical, SECRETS OF SIN, and to help familiarize you with her, Kensington is giving away 2 (two) copies. Let’s make sure these two ladies don’t remain under the radar. ;)
