Rate Me Reviews ~ For Your Arms Only – Caroline Linden

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Rate this book, please. :) Yes, what I’d like is for you, the readers, to review this book for other interested readers. Every once in a while, when a force beyond my control compels me, I’ll jot down my thoughts on a particular author or book and do a post. However, due to writing, running The Season sites and busy mommy life, that will happen infrequently. But the visitors to my blog want to see more current reviews and I want to give them what they want. So this is my solution to that.

What I will do is post the cover, the blurb and and the average rating or single rating from all the review sites that I can find. Then I want you the readers to rate the book and tell me what you thought of it. I think sometimes (perhaps a lot) readers would rather see what other readers thought of the book than a reviewer who does this as a job (or part-time job). Readers don’t HAVE to read a book they wouldn’t otherwise buy in a book store. Readers will buy or borrow from the library, books they want to read, books that pique their fancy. Who else then can give you a completely unbiased opinion of a book they took the time to seek out or put down cold hard cash to read?  So that’s how I (okay, my sister if I’m going to be completely honest) came up with RATE ME REVIEWS. I’ll leave the review posts until Sunday night and then the posts will get a page of their own, that way, as readers read the book, they can easily access the review to add their rating and comments or check to see what others thought of the book.

How do I pick the books? It’s usually going to go this way. If I buy the book myself, it will probably get a post to rate it (beyond my must buy authors, I usually will pick up mass market debuts). If I receive books from a publisher, you’ll more than likely see them here. With that said, the first book that will go up is Caroline Linden’s FOR YOUR ARMS ONLY from Avon Books. If you’ve never tried any of Caroline Linden’s books, you can read her free novella, Deeper Than Desire, here which is a companion piece to FOR YOUR ARMS ONLY. I think a free read is an excellent way to try out an author before plunking down money to buy their bigger books.

RT Book Reviews: 4 1/2 Stars, TOP PICK
“Linden weaves history into the backdrop of her current romance. Her characters, from very different backgrounds, are intriguing, honorable and deeply emotional. These characters, coupled with an unconventional plotline, combine to create a surprisingly rich and passionate tale.”

Good Reads: Average rating 3 1/2 Stars (4 ratings)

He’d never been shot by a woman . . .

He was once a distinguished army officer, a man of honor and heroism. But that was before Alexander Hayes was wrongly accused of treason. Forced to abandon everything he held dear, Alec became a spy for England in an attempt to clear his name. His latest commission sounds simple: locate a retired soldier gone missing. But it also sends him back home, to a family who’d thought him dead for five years—and a woman who’d like to shoot him.

Everything Cressida Turner’s ever heard about Alec tells her that he’s a traitor of the worst kind, and yet this enigmatic, infuriating, and utterly captivating man may be the only person she can trust—and the only one who can find her missing father. With nowhere else to turn, she reluctantly joins forces with Alec, unprepared for both the dangerous secrets that threaten them and the relentless passion that drives them into each other’s arms.

Always looking to improve

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Today, I was supposed to post a mini spotlight on Mary Balogh for her March Top Pick, FIRST COMES MARRIAGE. As you can seem I didn’t. I’m postponing that until next Tuesday (day after The Pitch Contest).

Today I’m posting a poll for you, the visitors. I’m trying to get a feel if I’m keeping on track with my mission for all The Season sites (website, blog, forum). What is my mission you ask? I want to introduce readers to as many authors as I can. Yes, it’s predominantly historical romance right now because that’s what I write and predominantly what I read. But also because it would be impossible for me to include ALL monthly contemporary, suspense, and paranormal romances–at least single-handed.

I’m an author so I’m super author friendly (at least I think I am) and love promoting other authors’ books. I’m a reader so I adore readers and want them to have fun visiting my sites. But I’m not perfect and as with most things, things CAN be improved. So that’s what the polls are about, making wanted and needed improvements all around. I hope you’ll take a moment to answer a few questions and/or add your suggestions in the comment area.

And the best suggestion (one that I implement) will get a random historical, suspense, contemporary or paranormal. :)

These statements are true

Debbie Macomber performs a Mrs. Miracle

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I have a HUGE soft spot for holiday books and movies. If we’re talking miracles and blessings I think George Bailey. I will undoubtedly watch It’s a Wonderful wendy_apronLife 3 times before 2010 arrives, and Miracle on 34th Street will probably get 2 viewings. But ask me what I’ll be watching December 5th at 8:00 pm. Seriously, ask. Well I’ll be tuned in to see the first adaptation of one of Debbie Macomber’s books: MRS. MIRACLE. I can’t resist a wonderful love story set around the holidays. Nope, I sure can’t.

So to celebrate the airing of MRS. MIRACLE on the Hallmark Channel,  Avon Books is re-releasing the book equipped with brand new cover and all. And together, Avon Books and The Season are giving away a copy of the book and a lovely apron. Wendy at Avon Books was gracious enough to model the MRS. MIRACLE apron for us. Even sans head, you can see Wendy is as pretty as can be. And tres fashionable I might add.

Seth Webster’s heart never healed after he lost his adored wife. Now, with Christmas approaching, wild twin boys to raise alone, a home in chaos, and the latest in a long line of exasperated housekeepers quitting in disgust, Seth needs more than help to keep his family together . . . he needs a miracle.

And then a miracle arrives on his doorstep. Her name is Mrs. Merkle, but the kids call her “Mrs. Miracle”—and from the moment the warm, knowing, and very patient nanny appears, everything is different. Her sassy spirit is infectious, and it gives Seth the courage to approach Reba, a beautiful travel agent who’s been hurt and betrayed, and is afraid to ever love again. Through the magic of faith—and with a little help from a children’s Christmas pageant and a lot of encouragement from Mrs. Miracle—Seth and Reba might just be able to find a Christmas miracle of their very own: true love.

Sarah Mayberry takes us Home for the Holidays

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

I’m going to start the post by saying that The Season doesn’t feature contemporary category romances simply because I do not have the manpower to feature them ALL. Plus, eHarlequin.com already does a fabulous job showcasing the massive catalogue of their books on their website. But I got my start reading romances with Harlequin Presents, so I’m a category advocate. And when I spot an author I think stands out, I like to yell it from the rooftops–or my blog now, as it were.

That said, let’s talk Sarah Mayberry.  I discovered Sarah back in 2006 with the release of her second Harlequin Blaze, Cruise Control. This book was sooooo good I had to email her and tell her (this was back when I never felt compelled to write an author if I loved their book). She was gracious as always and, of course, happy I loved her book. I then began to turn as many romance readers as I knew on to her. In short, I sang her MAJOR praises. Readers, she’s THAT GOOD! And with Cruise Control she became an ‘instant buy’ for me. Unfortunately, Cruise Control is out of print but I’ve linked the book cover to the e-book format available on eharlequin.com. If you love SERIOUS sexual tension, fabulous emotional conflict, and a fantastic romance, READ THIS BOOK! If you don’t read category romances and you’re willing to give them a try, I urge you to start here. (Honestly, the first scene in the limo when they first make eye contact…one word, HOT!)

cruise_control

Cruise Control
Author: Sarah Mayberry
Publisher: Harlequin Blaze
Pub. Date: May 2006
ISBN-13: 978-0263855968
256 pages

What good is a second chance if you don’t take a risk? That’s what limo driver Anna Jackson asks when the seriously hot Marc Lewis climbs in her car. She’s changed her looks, her career and now it’s time to shed the conservative habits of a lifetime. And seducing Marc is the best way to do that. Sure, he’s her client—sort of off-limits—but she’s not wrong about the invitation in his eyes.

All she has to do is remember three simple rules—never stay overnight, make no plans for the future and never, ever talk about emotions. Once they hit the sheets, however, the rules aren’t so easy to follow. And once they spend the night, can feelings be far behind?

What is it about Sarah’s books that have me completely hooked? She writes sexual tension, conflict, and a compelling romance like a pro. And your heart? Expect to have that organ wrung. You know that constricted ache in your heart you get when you’re completely immersed in the feelings and experiences of the characters. Yep, that’s what she does so well. She makes you care. She makes you feel. And the sexual tension, the sexual heat…well, let’s just say you won’t be disappointed. :)

amorousliaisons alloveryou takeonme

Some other memorables from Sarah are Amorous Liaisons, All Over You, Take On Me. Again, I’ve linked the covers to the e-book on eharlequin.com. I guarantee in all you will get Sarah’s trademark, heat, tension and compelling romance.

In March of 2009, I got news that Sarah had written a Super Romance. A Super Romance?? Wow. Now since I don’t usually read Super Romances I wondered what that book would be like. It would have less heat, I thought, for sure. Supers definitely aren’t as hot as Blazes. And aren’t they about home hearth and family. Not that there’s anything wrong with that (reliving an episode of Seinfeld right now). Would I be disappointed? I bought A Natural Father, sat down and read it straight through. Can this woman do no wrong? Does she not take one shaky step? Nope, Sarah pulled off her first Super Romance as if she’d mastered the darn thing years ago. So now I’m hooked on Sarah’s Supers too.

Which brings us to the focus of today’s review (which as you know, I don’t do): Home for the Holidays, which is Sarah’s second Super Romance. Dear readers, it is soooooo GOOD! If you don’t win a copy today, check your stores and see if any remain on the shelves (there are none at my local Walmart or Target anymore) because you need to buy it.

homefortheholidaysHome for the Holiday

Joe Lawson has a thing for his new neighbor Hannah Napier. As a single dad, he shouldn’t be thinking what he is about her. Still, that doesn’t stop them from getting close. And the way she connects with his kids, it’s as if they’re a family.

Turns out it’s too good to be true. Seems Hannah has plans that don’t include staying in Melbourne. Joe won’t stand between her and her dreams, even though letting her go is nearly impossible. The holidays are looking grim, with him and his kids missing Hannah like crazy. But it is the season of surprises, and Hannah may have one for them!

What I love about Home for the Holidays is that Sarah takes these unconventional heroines and totally makes you connect with them. Hannah is a mechanic who rides a motorcycle and was recently dumped by her ex-fiance. Joe is a widower with two kids who just moved in next door. They meet over the loud roar of her motorcycle that she is fixing one night in her garage while his kids are trying to sleep. As you can imagine he’s none too pleased with her, her bike, and that is evident in their exchange. Needless, to say they don’t get off to a wonderful start. I’ll be the first one to admit, I’m a sucker for a book that starts with immediate animosity between the heroine and hero but an immediate physical attraction.

As expected, their attraction supersedes their animosity and eventually, after a sizzling kiss, they are ‘dating’.  But all is not home free. Joe has two children and his thirteen-year-old son does not readily accept Hannah as the new woman in his father’s life. He has reasons and they wrench at your heart. Contrarily, Joe’s daughter thinks Hannah is the bees knees, that is why she’s utterly devastated when Hannah is intent on leaving to follow her dreams.

On both sides, there is family patching up that needs to go on (Hannah and her sister, Joe, his son and Hannah) before they can reach their HEA. What I love about Sarah’s books, is that she doesn’t get you there in the expected way. Right when you think you know what is going to happen, she drops something else on you that leaves you surprised, shocked, sometimes heartbroken. It takes the story to a whole different level, further engages you to take you on another emotional ride. That’s what she did here, and while my eyes smarted with tears, I threatened a boycott if she didn’t give us an epilogue. Of course, Sarah didn’t disappoint. :) She knows what must be done to give her readers a completely satisfying, emotional, and sexy read. With Home for the Holidays she masterfully succeeds.

Before I launch into my retrospective on Kensington’s covers, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Kate Duffy, who was their Editorial Director. As most of you know Kate Duffy past away September 27, 2009 at the age of 56. Her family, her friends, her authors, and her Kensington family mourn her loss. We all mourn her loss. Kate Duffy will be missed.

I would also like to thank my editor, Peter Senftleben,  for finding me a whole list of authors to research. Thank you Peter!

loveandcherish_1980_dg
As of 2009, Kensington has been publishing books for 35 years, which would take us back to 1974. I’m going to start my retrospective in 1980 (it’s very hard to find original covers going back that far, as I found out). Who did I find in 1980? I found Dorothy Garlock’s LOVE AND CHERISH. Look at the font of the title and how large it is. I think it takes up half the cover? By comparision, Ms. Garlock’s name is way at the top and significantly smaller. All in all, it’s a cover fairly appropriate for the time. Very red, wouldn’t you agree?

~~~
ambertreasure_1983_zebracaptiveecstasy_1981_zebra In 1981 and 1983 respectively, we have Elaine Barbieri’s CAPTIVE ECSTASY and AMBER TREASURE. I must say, CAPTIVE ECSTASY looks rather primitive to me. I mean I know Native Americans (usually half) were quite popular as heroes back then, but the cover doesn’t make me think of a grand passion, a romance. And I’m sure I know the guy on the cover of AMBER TREASURE. His hair reminds me of a guy I saw on Columbo. Not kidding. Also notice that Ms. Barbieri’s name is barely discernible on either cover. All in all, the covers do look dated don’t they? Wow these books were from almost 30 years ago.
~~~

savagesplendour_1985_zebraTwo years later Kensington gave us Constance O’Banyon’s SAVAGE SPLENDOUR. As we see the Native American hero continues to be a strong sell in historical romances. This cover has a particular brushstroke that I find…interesting. I stared at this cover for a long time trying to figure out what was nagging at me about it, until I realized the proportions of the hero and heroine appear to be somewhat off. Her shoulders look too narrow and his arms look too short for his body. Suffice it enough to say this won’t make my top ten list.

~~~
hiddenfires_1988_zebraOn the other hand, Betina Krahn’s HIDDEN FIRES, released in 1988, has a perfectly proportioned hero and heroine. This cover works for me. So what if it appears she’s wearing a negligee and that it doesn’t look all that ‘historical’. It’s a lovely clinch cover, very much the norm. But once again, I can not make out Ms. Krahn’s name. I think not only is it small but the font is not lending itself to easy reading.
~~~

passionssweetrevenge_1990_zebraNow around 1990, Kensington added a hologram to their Zebra covers as you can see on Jo Goodman’s PASSION’S SWEET REVENGE. It was finding this cover that I realized I used to get these books, 4 (four) every month. At that point I was hooked on Bobbi Smith, Jo Goodman and Cassie Edwards. I read America West, Native American stories until I couldn’t read them anymore. Seriously.  But I really like this cover. It definitely has a more historical feel than HIDDEN FIRES. And I do remember thinking that the hologram was way cool. :)

~~~
morepreciousthangold_1992_zebra forevermyheart_1994_zebra withallmyheart_1999_jogoodman
In the 199os, we see less skin, less embracing, and more flowers (for certain authors). On Elaine Barbieri’s MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD, Kensington has employed a beek-a-boo cover. The font is less ‘scripty’ than in prior years and please look at the position and scale of Ms. Barbieri’s name! I want to do a cheer. I’m so relieved I can now read it. I like this cover. It works for me. And while Jo Goodman’s 1994 book, FOREVER MY HEART and her 1999 release ALL MY HEART in no way indicated they were historical romances, I didn’t mind this more tame look. As we saw last week with some of the other authors as they rose in stature when their careers blossomed, their names became as big as or bigger than their titles and hero/heroine clinch was removed from the front covers of their novels.
~~~

stolenecstasy_2001 lovingjesse_2004 howtoenjoyascandal_2008

Having survived the turn of the millennium, the world safely moved into the 21st century. In 2001 Hannah Howell’s CAPTIVE ECSTASY is on the book shelves. The heroine and hero are in a fairly provocative pose. It’s a western but it’s hard to tell. In 2004 we have Joyce Myrus’s LOVING JESSE. This reminds me of a traditional Regency cover, chaste and sweet. I haven’t seen one like this from Kensington up to this point. Four years later in 2008, Adrienne Basso’s HOW TO ENJOY A SCANDAL sees our hero and heroine hitting the sheets. Quite literally. Again, here I wouldn’t  peg this as a’ historical looking’ but all in all, it works if the objective was to show the readers they will be getting a sexy read.

~~~
LostinYou_Aug08 sinfulsurrender180
And now we’re here in 2009 and as a Kensington debut author, I’d be lying if I didn’t admit how many pins and needles I sat on while waiting for the unveiling of my cover. In 2008 there were many covers that looked like Alix Rickloff’s LOST IN YOU. There was nothing wrong with these types of covers, but I hoping for more clothes and a more historical feel to mine. Janice Rossi in Kensington’s art department made sure that not only was I NOT disappointed,  but that I was THRILLED with my cover for SINFUL SURRENDER. As you can see, I couldn’t have asked for a better looking couple. Seriously though, isn’t my hero (James) gorgeous! And my heroine (Missy) is beautiful too. :)
~~~

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Today on Excerpts Thursdays, we have two books I’m greatly anticipating. And just look, aren’t the covers for both absolutely GORGEOUS covers? Talk about the love of the cover gods. I don’t know about you guys, but I was completely hooked by both excerpts. These books will definitely jump to the top of my TBR pile. :)

allnightwitharogueAll Night With A Rogue ~ Alexandra Hawkins
Release Date: February 2, 2010 ~ St. Martin’s Press

Juliana bit her lips to suppress her soft groan.  Her legs instinctively tightened around the trunk of the hazel tree, pressing the hard roughened surface against her feminine core.  In spite of the coolness of the evening, she felt hot and light-headed.  If she did not calm her rattled nerves, she was going to do something to give herself away like fainting and falling out of the cursed tree!

In an agitated gesture, she dragged her hand from her hair, causing the unexpected to happen.  One of the tiny white plumes tucked into her upswept tresses slipped free.  Without thinking, Juliana reached out to grasp the errant two-inch curl of fluff that was destined to be her downfall.  The lissome plume evaded her fingers, dancing on the breeze created by her frantic motion.  It silently drifted down to the couple.

Juliana brought her fist to her mouth and silently prayed.  Both Lady Lettlecott and Sin were distracted for the moment.  Perhaps the tiny feather would remain unnoticed.  The husky moans and disconcertingly wet smacking noises coming from below heartened Juliana.

Until the fragile white plume landed on the top of the countess’s dark tresses.  Even in the moonlight, it was a stark beacon.  Juliana held her breath.  She mentally willed the plume to catch another breeze and disappear into the inky blackness of the ground.

Fly!

Any hope she harbored was dashed when Sin’s fingers moved from his lover’s shoulder to the lady’s hair.  To the traitorous plume.  His shoulders stiffened as he held up the feather, rubbing the light down between his fingers as he wordlessly contemplated its origins.  Then without warning, Sin tipped his head back and stared directly into Juliana’s troubled gaze.

Alexius Lothar Braverton, Marquess of Sinclair, or simply Sin to his friends, had made the most of his five and twenty years.  His privileged existence was filled with excessive indulgences, the forbidden, and oftentimes the perilous.  Very few things in life surprised him.  That was, until he looked up into the branches of hazel tree and saw the pale, frightened face of a young woman.

The air in his lungs burst from his lips.

Abby, naturally, thought her skillful tongue and measure of his cock was the reason for his lapse of control.  Alexius was content to let her believe he was enthralled.  The countess’s soft tongue curling and lapping the full length of him was pleasurable, even if his interest had drifted decidedly upward.  Besides, if he exposed the little interloper, he would never learn why she was watching them from the tree.

And, yes, he was . . . intrigued.

From his vantage point, her appealing looks caught his jaded eye.  Long blond corkscrew curls were draped chaotically around her oval face, hanging like the golden catkins of the hazel tree.  A pair of languid almond-shaped eyes balanced the delicate slope of her nose, and the rounded curve of her chin made his fingers itch to inspect each line.  Her skin was pale, luminous, like the moon overhead.  Whether it was natural or from fear he could only guess.  Her full lips parted, as if she struggled to draw air into her chest.

Who the devil was she?

Whish! Whish! Whish!

The sound interrupted Sir Stephen Carleton’s thoughts as he passed the storeroom.  Drawing his sword, he eased the door of the storeroom open to take a look.

“Lady Hume!”  She looked as surprised as he was to catch her alone in a storeroom attacking a sack of grain with a sword.

“Close the door!” she hissed. “I cannot be seen here.”

And what a sight she was, with her cheeks flushed and strands of dark hair sticking to her face and neck. . God preserve him. He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

“I meant for you to remain outside when you closed it.”

Though she took a step back as she spoke, she kept a firm hand on her sword. As she should.

“That sack cannot provide much of a challenge,” he said, trying to put her at ease.

“You make fun of me.” There was resentment in her tone, but he was pleased to see her shoulders relax.

“Now, do you want to continue playing at sword fighting?” he asked, deliberately baiting her. “Or do you want to learn how to protect yourself from someone who intends you harm?”

Green eyes sparking with fire, she raised her sword and said, “Teach me.”

Oh, what he would love to teach her!

“You should carry a short blade, as well,” he instructed as he fended off her attack.

“Why? You think you can knock my sword from my hand?”

“I can, but I will not have to. You will drop it.”

He forced her to step back, and back, and back again. Once more, and her heel caught on an empty sack. She threw her hands up, sending the sword clattering against the wall as she tumbled backward. The next moment, she was lying back on her elbows, her hair loose about her shoulders, skirts askew, chest heaving.

Stephen could not move, could not even breathe.

“I’m afraid you have the advantage of me,” she said, her eyes dancing. She reached her hand up for him to help her to her feet.

He took it and sank to his knees beside her.  “Not true, Isobel,” he said in a harsh whisper. “’Tis I who am at your mercy.”

His eyes fixed on her lips, full and parted, and he gave in to the inexorable pull toward them. The moment their lips touched, fire seared through him. … He let himself sink down further and groaned aloud as his swollen shaft pressed against her hip.

But he froze the instant he felt the prick of cold steel against his neck.

“You are right,” she said so close to his ear that he could feel her breath, “ ’tis wise to carry a short blade.”
